? R. Shmuel Salant (1816-1909) was born in
Bialystok, and studied in the great yeshiva of
Volozhin. After marrying the eldest daughter of R.
Yosef Zundel of Salant, he adopted his father-inlaw’s
family name. In 1840 he ascended to Jerusalem
which at the time had a very small community of
Ashkenazic Jews. From 1848 to 1851 he served as
a meshulach (fund-raiser), visiting the principal
cities of Lithuania and Poland to raise money for
the impoverished Jews of the Old Yishuv. Known as
a great scholar, and beloved by the masses, in 1871
he succeeded R. Meir Auerbach as Chief Rabbi
of the Ashkenazic Jerusalem community. Under
his guidance, the community expanded steadily
growing from 5,000 to 30,000 Jews, whom he led
until the advanced age of 93.
