Important autograph postcard by R. Yaakov Dovid Willowski to R. Aaron Mendel Cohen (1866-1927), the Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of Cairo, concerning an event which took place on Lag B’Omer where certain individuals ridiculed discussions between the two Rabbonim. He also suggests a meeting of Rabbonim take place in Yerusholayim in the days leading up to Shavuos.
R. Yaakov Dovid Willowski, known by the acronym RIDBAZ (1845-1913), was one of the greatest Talmidei Chachomim and Rabbinical leaders of his era. He served as Rav in various important communities in Lithuania including Izballin, Bobruisk, Vilna, Vilkomir and Slutzk. In 1903, he immigrated to the United States serving initially as a Rav in New York and later in Chicago. His tenure in America was tumultuous, and he suffered greatly from boorish, uncouth individuals, particularly those who resisted his heroic efforts to improve the kashrus of the meat industry. Eventually he immigrated to Eretz Yisroel settling in Tzfas. His many works include his Nimukei Ridvaz, and a commentary on the entire Talmud Yerushalmi.

גלויה אוטוגרפית ארוכה שכתב ר’ יעקב דוד ווילדובסקי לר’ אהרון מנדל כהן (תרכ”ו- תרפ”ז, 1866-1927), הרב הראשי האשכנזי של קהיר, בעניין מספר אנשים אשר הוציאו לעז על השיג והשיח בין שני רבנים במהלך אירוע מסוים בל”ג בעומר. הוא אף מציע לקיים אסיפת רבנים בירושלים בימים שלפני חג השבועות.
ר’ יעקב דוד ווילובסקי, הידוע בראשי התיבות של שמו – הרידב”ז, (תר”ה – תרע”ג, 1845-1913), היה מתלמידי החכמים והמנהיגים הרבניים הגדולים ביותר בתקופתו. הוא כיהן כרב בקהילות חשובות רבות בליטא, ביניהן איזבלין, בוברויסק, וילנא, ווילקומיר, וסלוצק. בשנת תרס”ג (1903) הוא היגר לארה”ב שם כיהן כרב בתחילה בניו יורק, ובהמשך בשיקגו. תקופת כהונתו באמריקה הייתה סוערת, והוא סבל רבות מאנשים גסים, נבערים מדעת, במיוחד מהמתנגדים למאמציו הכבירים לשיפור הכשרות של תעשיית הבשר. בסופו של דבר עלה לארץ ישראל והשתקע בצפת. חיבוריו הרבים כוללים נימוקי רידב”ז, ופרוש על התלמוד הירושלמי במלואו.
