Signed letter by R. Yosef Yitzchok Schneerson, to a Chossid R. Yaakov Tzvi. After giving a warm blessing for “Parnossa” (livelihood), the Rebbe requests that since R. Yaakov Tzvi will be travelling to India and Yemen, he should please report back on the situation of religious life in these places, particularly regarding Jewish education, Shemiras Shabbos, Mikvaos and Torah learning. This letter is indicative of the far-reaching concern of the Rebbe for world Jewry, decades before a formal Chabad presence was established in India.
R. Yosef Yitzchok Schneerson (1880-1950), was the only son of R. Sholom Dov Ber (Ra’SHaB). At the young age of 17, he was appointed head of the Tomchei Temimim Yeshiva network. In 1920, upon the passing of his father, he became the sixth Rebbe of Chabad Lubavitch. After constant persecution and arrest, he was released from Soviet Russia and went to Eretz Yisroel and then to the United States in 1929-1930. Subsequently he returned to Riga, Latvia until 1934. From 1934 until the early part of World War Two, he lived in Warsaw, Poland. After miraculously escaping Warsaw in the early days of the War, he immigrated to America where he continued his efforts on behalf of the Jewish People.

מכתב חתום על ידי ר’ יוסף יצחק שניאורסון לחסיד בשם ר’ יעקב צבי. לאחר ברכה לבבית לפרנסה בשפע, הרבי מבקש שבעת נסיעתו להודו ותימן הוא ידווח על מצב חיי הדת במקומות אלו, בפרט בנושא חינוך יהודי, שמירת שבת, מקוואות ולימוד תורה. מכתב זה מעיד על דאגתו רחבת הטווח של הרבי ליהדות העולמית עשרות שנים לפני יצירת מוקדי חב”ד פורמליים בהודו.
ר’ יוסף יצחק שניאורסון (תר”מ-תש”י 1880-1950), היה בנו יחידו של ר’ שלום דב בער (הרש”ב). בעודו בן 17 שנים בלבד מונה לראש ישיבות תומכי תמימים. בשנת תר”פ (1920), עם פטירת אביו, התמנה לאדמו”ר השישי מחב”ד. לאחר תביעות ומעצרים מתמידים, יצא מרוסיא ונסע לארץ ישראל ואחר כך לארצות הברית בשנים תרפ”ט-תר”צ (1929-1930), ולאחר מכן חזר לריגה, לטביה עד תרצ”ד (1934). משנת תרצ”ד (1934) ועד ראשית מלחמת העולם השנייה התגורר בוורשה שבפולין. לאחר שנמלט בנס מוורשה בראשית המלחמה הוא היגר לאמריקה, שם המשיך את מאמציו לטובת עם ישראל.
