R. Moshe Shatzkes (1881-1958), was born in Vilna to his father who was known as “the Zhetel Illui” and was one of the leaders of the Vilna community. After the untimely passing of his father, R. Moshe’s mother remarried to R. Itzele Blazer (Peturburger), a prized Talmid of R. Yisroel Salanter. In addition to being brought up by R. Itzele, R. Moshe studied in the Yeshivos of Slabodka and Telz and received Semicha from R. Refoel Shapiro and R. Eliezer Gordon. R. Moshe served as Rav in Lipnishuk, Ivye and later, at the behest of R. Chaim Ozer, of Lomza in 1931. At the outbreak of the Second World War, R. Moshe escaped to Vilna and upon the passing of R. Shimon Shkop, he succeeded him as Rosh Yeshiva of the Grodno Yeshiva. After traveling through Shanghai, he arrived to the United States in 1941, where he served as Rosh Yeshiva in Yeshivas Rabbeinu Yitzchok Elchonon until his passing. World renowned as a great Gaon and one of the greatest rabbinical figures of his time.

מכתב אוטוגרפי נדיר שכתב ר’ משה שאצקס לארגון עזרת תורה, בו הוא מבקש סיוע לישיבת לומז’ה. עם פרטים אודות המצב הכלכלי הקשה של הישיבה והצוות.
ר’ משה שאצקס (תרמ”א- תשי”ח, 1881-1958), נולד בווילנה לאביו שכונה “העילוי מזעהטל” והיה ממנהיגי קהילת וילנא. לאחר פטירתו בטרם עת של אביו, נישאה אמו של ר’ משה בשנית לר’ איצ’לה בלאזר (פטרבורגר), תלמידו המוערך של ר’ ישראל סלנטר. בנוסף לחינוך שקיבל בבית מר’ איצלה, ר ‘משה אף למד בישיבות סלבודקה וטלז והתעטר בסמיכה לרבנות מר’ רפאל שפירא ור’ אליעזר גורדון. ר’ משה כיהן כרב בליפנישוק, איוויה ומאוחר יותר, על פי בקשתו של ר’ חיים עוזר, בלומז’ה בשנת תרצ”א (1931). עם פרוץ המלחמה ברח ר’ משה לוילנה ועם פטירתו של ר’ שמעון שקאפ, מילא את מקומו בתפקיד ראש ישיבת ישיבת גרודנא. הוא נמלט לארצות הברית דרך שנחאי בשנת תש”א (1941), שם שימש כראש ישיבה בישיבת רבנו יצחק אלחנן עד פטירתו. נודע בכל העולם כגאון עצום ומגדולי הדמויות הרבניות בתקופתו.
