Autograph letter of responsa by R. Yosef Rosen of Dvinsk to R. Y. Landau of Frankfurt, regarding the Rabbinate of Frankfurt following the passing of R. Shlomo Zalman Breuer in 1926. Some members of the community wanted his son R. Refoel Breuer to succeed him but others were in favor of another candidate. (See Kovetz Milin Chavivin year 3 for the letter sent to the Rogatchover). The Rogatchover responded with various Talmudic sources which favored both views.
R. Yosef Rosen (1858-1936), was born in Rogatchov and learned in the Slutzk Yeshiva under the Bais HaLevi together with R. Chaim Soloveitchik who was five years his senior. He subsequently studied under R. Yehoshua Leib Diskin in Shklov. In 1889, he became Rav of the Chassidic community in Dvinsk where he served for nearly fifty years alongside R. Meir Simcha HaKohen who was the Rav of the Misnagdim there. He was a Talmudic genius, famous for both his lightning grasp and prodigious memory coupled with tremendous diligence. מכתב תשובה אוטוגרפי שכתב ר’ יוסף רוזין מדווינסק לר’ י. מפרנקפורט, בעניין הרבנות בפרנקפורט אחר פטירת ר’ שלמה זלמן ברויאר בתרפ”ו 1926. חלק מחברי הקהילה צדדו בבנו, ר’ רפאל הירש כממלא מקומו, אולם החלק האחר התנגד. (ראה קובץ מילין שנה 3 את המכתב שנשלח לרוגאצובער). הרוגאצובער השיב במקורות תלמודיים לכן ולכאן.
ר’ יוסף רוזן (תרי”ח-תרצ”ו 1858-1936) נולד ברוגאצ’וב ולמד בישיבת סלוצק אצל בעל הבית הלוי יחד עם ר’ חיים סולובייצ’יק, שהיה מבוגר ממנו בחמש שנים. לאחר מכן למד אצל ר’ יהושע לייב דיסקין בשקלוב. בשנת תרמ”ט (1889) התמנה לרב הקהילה החסידית בדווינסק, שם כיהן כחמישים שנה לצד ר’ מאיר שמחה הכהן, שהיה רב “המתנגדים” במקום. היה גאון עצום, והצטיין בתפיסתו המבריקה ובזיכרונו המפליא בשילוב שקדנות עצומה. מחבר ספר צפנת פענח.
