Long autograph responsum by R. Yosef Shaul Nathanson, the Sho’el U’Maishiv, to R. Yaakov Shlomo Halpern, then the Av Beis Din of Dinov and later Rav of Premishlan, on the topics of Mezuzah and Nedarim. This is in response to questions posed to the Sho’el U’Maishiv by R. Halpern regarding novella of the Sho’el U’Maishiv in Yad Shaul and Yados Nedarim respectively.
R. Yosef Shaul Nathanson (1808-1875), who served as Rav in Lemberg following R. Yaakov Orenstein (Yeshuos Yaakov), was renowned as one of the greatest rabbinical leaders and poskim of his generation. He was held in tremendous esteem by all the great scholars of his era, and he replied to thousands of halachic queries which were sent to him from around the world. His responsa are contained in the multi-volume Sho’el U’Maishiv which is one of the most widely cited halachic seforim authored in recent generations.

תשובה אוטוגרפית ארוכה מאת ר’ יוסף שאול נתנזון, בעל השואל ומשיב, לר’ יעקב שלמה הלפרין, אז אב בית הדין בדינוב, ולימים רבה של פרמישלאן, העוסקת בענייני מזוזה ונדרים. המכתב עונה לשאלות ששאל הר’ הלפרין את השואל ומשיב על חידושי התורה שהוציא זה האחרון לאור בספריו יד שאול וידות נדרים בהתאמה.
ר’ יוסף שאול נתנזון (תקס”ח- תרל”ה, 1808-1875), כיהן כרב בלמבערג אחרי ר’ יעקב אורנשטיין (בעל ישועות יעקב) ונודע כאחד מגדולי הפוסקים והמנהיגים הרבניים בדורו. היה נערץ מאוד בקרב כל תלמידי החכמים בדורו וענה לשאלות הלכתיות רבות שהגיעו אליו מכל רחבי העולם. פסיקותיו ההלכתיות נלקטו בספר רב הכרכים שואל ומשיב. זהו אחד מספרי ההלכה של הדורות האחרונים, שרבים הם המצטטים ממנו.
