Signed letter in which the Sdei Chemed expresses disbelief over the fact that he had sent copies of his seforim to two distinguished individuals and has not been compensated for them. He writes that perhaps he should attribute the lack of payment to the fact that they had not requested the seforim, however he would at least expect that they would return them if they are not of interest. He concludes the letter writing how it pains him to have to spend his time writing letters regarding such matters, since time is precious to all Bnai Torah and even to simple individuals like himself.
R. Chaim Chizkiyahu Medini (1833-1905) was born in Jerusalem and studied under R. Yitzchok Kobo and R. Yosef Nissim Burlo. Orphaned of his father at a young age, he travelled to Constantinople where he taught Torah and served as a Dayan. He later served as Rav in Krasov, eventually returning to Eretz Yisroel where he became the Chief Rabbi of Chevron. Renowned as a phenomenal Talmid Chochom and great Tsaddik. His Magnum Opus, Sdei Chemed a compendium of Talmudic principles received great acclaim and remains a classic work.

Postcard presenting his most recent sefer to R. Moshe Rosen.
Rabbi Moshe Rosen (1871-1956) was one of the most distinguished Talmudic scholars in the United States. As a young Rav in Lithuania he studied with the Chazon Ish and upon emigrating to the U.S.A, he became a Rav in Brownsville. He authored the multi-volume Nezer Ha’Kodesh on the difficult Talmudic order of Kodshim as well as a volume of responsa entitled Shailas Moshe.

מכתב חתום שבו השדי חמד מביע תדהמה על כך שהוא טרם קיבל תשלום משני אנשים חשובים שאליהם שלח עותקים של ספרו. הוא כותב שאולי עליו לייחס את אי התשלום לכך שהם לא ביקשו את הספרים, אך לכל הפחות הוא היה מצפה שיחזירו אותם אם הם אינם מעוניינים בהם. הוא מסיים את המכתב ברגשי כאב על הצורך להשקיע זמן בכתיבת מכתבים כגון אלו, היות שהזמן יקר לכל בני התורה ואפילו לאנשים פשוטים כמותו.
ר’ חיים חזקיהו מדיני (תקצ”ג-תרס”ה 1833-1905) נולד בירושלים ולמד תחת חסותם של ר’ יצחק קובו ור’ יוסף ניסים בורלו. לאחר שהתייתם מאביו בגיל צעיר הוא נסיע לקונסטנטינופול, שם הרביץ תורה ושימש כדיין. בהמשך הוא כיהן כרב בקראסוב, ולבסוף חזר לארץ ישראל ושימש כרב הראשי של חברון. שמו יצא לפניו כתלמיד חכם בעל שיעור קומה וצדיק עצום. יצירת חייו, שדי חמד, שהינו אוסף של עקרונות תלמודיים, זכה לתשואות רבות ונותר יצירה קלאסית עד ימינו.

ר’ משה רוזן (תרל”א-תשט”ז 1871-1956) היה אחד מתלמידי החכמים הדגולים ביותר בארצות הברית. בתור רב צעיר בליטא הוא למד עם החזון איש, ולאחר שהיגר לארצות הברית התמנה לרב בבראונסוויל. הוא כתב את היצירה רבת הכרכים “נזר הקודש” על סדר קדשים, וכן ספר שו”ת “שאילת משה”.
