Autograph letter by R. Yechezkel Landau, the famed Noda B’Yehuda of Prague. Dated the 3rd of Cheshvan 5524 (1764), he writes: “To his honor the Katzin HaRav R. Nota Epstein. The time to thresh the wheat for Pesach has arrived, please be so good as to send to Moreinu HaRav R. Anshel Ozer’s D’Ma”SH Y”TZ (Dayan Moreh Shaveh Yishmireyhu Tzuro) the amount of 30 gold coins for the expenses, Ha’Katan Yechezkel”.
R. Yechezkel Landau (1713-1793), was born in Opatow and studied in the great Yeshivos of Ludmir and Brody. He served first as a Dayan in Brody and later as a Rav in Yampol. Whilst in Yampol, his reputation preceded him to the renowned Jewish community of Prague who retained him as Rav, where he served until his passing. He was held in awe by his rabbinical contemporaries as well as the general population, and was greatly respected in government circles. World famous as one of the most prominent rabbinical leaders of his generation, he led a great Yeshiva and authored many important works, including his classic halachic responsa Noda B’Yehuda (after which he is known), Dagul Mer’vavah on the Shulchan Aruch and Tzion L’Nefesh Chaya (abbreviated as Tz’lach) on the Talmud.

ר’ יחזקאל לנדא (תע”ג – תקנ”ג, 1713-1793) נולד באופטוב ולמד בישיבות לודמיר וברודי המעטירות. הוא שימש תחילה כדיין בברודי ולאחר מכן כרב בימפול. שמו הלך לפניו בעודו בימפול, והקהילה היהודית הנודעת בפראג בחרה בו כרב. הוא כיהן במקום עד פטירתו. חבריו הרבנים והקהל הרחב העריצו אותו עד מאוד, וגם אנשי הממשל רחשו לו כבוד רב. נודע ברחבי העולם כאחד מגדולי המנהיגים הרבניים בדורו וכתב ספרים חשובים רבים כולל שו”ת “נודע ביהודה” (שעל שמו הוא קרוי), ” דגול מרבבה” על השולחן ערוך ו”ציון לנפש חיה” (צל”ח) על הש”ס.
