Autograph halachic responsum regarding the required height of a Mechitzah in a Shul dated 1953. The issue of Mechitzahs in Shuls was a matter of great contention in the 1950’s particularly between the Orthodox and the Conservative. Beginning with the great importance of having a proper Mechitzah erected, and how one must make every effort to achieve this, R. Yaakov continues that in view that the Shul in question has a distinguished Rav of their own, he refuses to answer the question. He continues by firmly stressing that counsel from outside Rabbonim can degrade the authority of the local Rav.
Of particular interest due to the rarity of halachic responsa available from R. Kamenetzky. Furthermore the keen response prioritizing the importance of the Rav of a congregation, personifies the sagely world view for which he was famous.
R. Yaakov Kamenetzky (1891-1986) born in Lithuania and studied in the famed Slabodka Yeshiva for many years. He was renowned as a great Talmid Chochom, Posek and for his refined character. He served as Rav in Tzitavyan, and after immigrating to the U.S became Rosh Yeshiva at Yeshiva Torah Vo’daas. He also served a major leadership role in establishing Orthodox American Jewry, guiding the community until his passing in 1986.

תשובה אוטוגרפי הנוגע לגובה הדרוש למחיצה בבית כנסת בשנת תשי”ג (1953). סוגיית המחיצות בבתי הכנסת הייתה שנויה מאוד במחלוקת בשנות התש”י (1950), בפרט בין האורתודוקסים לקונסרבטיביים. ר’ יעקב פותח בחשיבות הגדולה של הקמת מחיצה ראויה, ומסביר שיש לעשות כל מאמץ כדי לעשות זאת. הוא ממשיך שהיות שרב נכבד מכהן בביתה הכנסת המדובר, הוא מסרב לענות על השאלה. הוא ממשיך בהדגשה תקיפה שקבלת ייעוץ מרבנים חיצוניים עלולה לערער את סמכותו של הרב המקומי.
המכתב מעורר עניין במיוחד בשל התשובה החריפה המעמידה את מעמד רב הקהילה בראש סולם העדיפויות מגלמת את השקפת העולם הנבונה שבשלה התפרסם.
ר’ יעקב קמינצקי (תרנ”א-תשמ”ו 1891-1986) נולד בליטא ולמד בישיבת סלבודקה המעטירה במשך שנים רבות. הוא נודע כתלמיד חכם ופוסק בעל שיעור קומה, ומידותיו המעודנות היו לשם דבר. הוא כיהן כרב בציטוויאן, ולאחר הגירתו לארצות הברית התמנה לראש ישיבת תורה ודעת. כמו כן, הוא שיחק תפקיד מרכזי בביסוס היהדות האורתודוקסית האמריקאית, והמשיך להנחות את הקהילה עד פטירתו בשנת תשמ”ו (1986).
