Historic autograph letter by the Aruch HaShulchan regarding the Shechita dispute in London. The shechita dispute, which engaged many of the leading Gedolim of the period, started in 1891 and raged until 1904. An agreement was finally reached in 1905 between the Board of Shechita, the Machzike Hadath and the Federation of Synagogues. The North London Beth Hamedrash did not subscribe to the agreement and several years later in 1909 became the Adath Yisroel Community. See “A Fortress in Anglo Jewry” by Bernard Homa (London 1953).
The letter is written to Mr. J. Zinkin and the Gaon R. Zalman Tuvya, Rav Yaakov and the “Chaburah Hakdosha” which is presumably the Chevra Machzike Hadath. He writes that he is unsure if what Mr. Zinkin suggested is the correct approach and recommends that they write to his brother-in-law the Netziv of Volozhin although he is very ill (the Netziv passed away a few weeks later) and gives the Netziv’s Warsaw address, rather than writing to R. Yitzchok Elchonon Spector.
R. Yechiel Michel Ha’Levi Epstein (1830-1908), was known as one of the great rabbinical leaders and Poskim of his era. In 1873, he was appointed as Rav of Novardok where he served with great distinction until his passing. His magnum opus Aruch HaShulchan was received with great acclaim and remains a classic Halachic sefer.

מכתב אוטוגרפי היסטורי שכתב בעל הערוך השולחן בעניין מחלוקת השחיטה בלונדון. מחלוקת השחיטה, שהעסיקה רבים מגדולי המנהיגים בתקופתה, התחילה בתרנ”א 1891 והתמשכה עד לשנת תרס”ד 1904. בשנת תרס”ה 1905 הושגה לבסוף הסכמה בין מועצת השחיטה, מחזיקי הדת וחברת בני ישראל (Federation). בית המדרש צפון לונדון לא הצטרפו להסכם, ובהמשך השנים, בשנת תרס”ט 1909 הפכה לקהילת עדת ישראל. ראה “מצודה ביהדות אנגליה” מאת ברנארד הומא (לונדון תשי”ג 1953).
מכתב זה ממוען למר י. זינקין ולגאון ר’ זלמן טוביה ור’ יעקב ו”החבורה הקדושה” שמסתבר שהכוונה לחברה מחזיקי הדת. הוא כותב כי אינו בטוח שהצעתו של מר זינקין היא הגישה הנכונה, וכי הוא מציע שיכתבו לגיסו הנצי”ב מוואלוז’ין, אם כי הוא חולה מאוד (אכן הנצי”ב נפטר שבועות מספר אחר כך), ומוסיף את כתובתו של הנצי”ב, במקום לכתוב לר’ יצחק אלחנן ספקטור.
ר’ יחיאל מיכל אפשטיין (תק”צ-תרס”ח 1830-1908) נודע כאחד המנהיגים הרבניים הגדולים ופוסקי ההלכה של דורו. בשנת תרל”ג (1873) הוא התמנה לרב בנובהרדוק, שם כיהן בהצטיינות עד לפטירתו. ספרו, ערוך השולחן, התקבל בהערכה עצומה ונותר ספר הלכתי בסיסי עד היום.
