Long autograph letter by R. Archik Bakst written during his tenure as Rav of Suvalk (1921-1925), to the Va’ad HaYeshivos in Vilna. Concerning important issues facing the Jewish community and the Yeshiva. With mention of various important cities and a rabbinical delegation to America. Additional mention of the Chofetz Chaim!
This letter provides a rare glimpse of the internal workings of one Lithuania’s finest Yeshivos. The community of Suvalk was among the most prestigious in Lithuania. Many distinguished rabbinical figures served there, including R. Yitzchok Isaac Chaver, R. Shmuel Mohilever, R. Chaim Heller, R. Archik Bakst and R. Yosef Yoslovitz. The final Rav was R. Dovid Lipchitz later of RIETS and known as the Suvalker Rav.
R. Aaron Yosef Bakst, known as “R. Archik” (1869-1941), learned in the Volozhin Yeshiva, and later in the “Kibbutz” in Slabodka under R. Itzel Blazer. He then went to learn in the Talmud Torah of Kelm, where he became close to the Alter of Kelm. He served as Rav in various communities most notably Shavel. He was held in great esteem by the Chofetz Chaim, who would summon him by telegram to Radin to join various rabbinical meetings and consultations. It is said that the Chofetz Chaim would don Shabbos clothing whenever R. Archik came to Radin (Lev Aaron, p. 34). He was also a gifted orator, and his Deroshos drew large crowds, young and old alike. During WWI, he escaped to Poltava, Ukraine, where the Mir Yeshiva, then under the leadership of his colleague R. Yeruchum of Mir, also found refuge. He was murdered together with his community in 1941.

מכתב אוטוגרפי ארוך שכתב ר’ ארצ’יק באקשט בתקופת כהונתו כרב בסובאלק (תרפ”א- תרפ”ה, 1921-1925), לוועד הישיבות בווילנא בנושאים חשובים בענייני הקהילה והישיבה. הוא מזכיר ערים חשובות רבות ומשלחת רבנית לאמריקה. כמו כן החפץ חיים מוזכר במכתב!
מכתב זה מהווה הצצה נדירה אל התנהלותה הפנימית של אחת הישיבות המצוינות בליטא. קהילת סובאלק היתה מהקהילות המעטירות ביותר בליטא, ורבנים נכבדים רבים כיהנו בה ברבנות, ביניהם ר’ יצחק אייזיק חבר, ר’ שמואל מוהיליבר, ר’ חיים הלר, ר’ ארצ’יק באקשט, ור’ יוסף יוסלוביץ. רבה האחרון היה ר’ דוד ליפשיץ המכונה הרב מסובאלק (לימים מישיבת רבינו יצחק אלחנן).
ר’ אהרן יוסף באקשט, המכונה ר’ ארצ’יק (תרכ”ט- תש”א, 1869-1941) למד בישיבת וואלאז’ין ואחר כך בהקיבוץ בסלבודקא אצל ר’ איצלה’ בלאזר. המשיך ללמוד בתלמוד התורה בקלם שם התקרב להאלטער מקלם. כיהן כרב בקהילות שונות, כשהנודעת מכולן היא שאוול. החפץ חיים העריצו עד מאוד ולעיתים קרובות אף היה משתפו באספות רבניות ודיונים בראדין. מסופר כי החפץ חיים היה לובש בגדי שבת כל אימת שהיה ר’ ארצ’יק בא לראדין (לב אהרן עמוד 34). היה גם דרשן מופלא, ואל דרשותיו נמשכו המונים, זקנים ונערים. במהלך מלחמת העולם הראשונה, עבר לפלטובה שבאוקרינה, בה מצאה גם ישיבת מיר, אז תחת הנהגתו של חברו ר’ ירוחם ממיר, מחסה. נרצח יחד עם בני קהילתו בשנת תש”א 1941.
