Autograph letter by R. Chaim Ozer Grodzensky to the well-known American philanthropist R. Yisroel Aaron (Harry) Fischel (1865-1948).
In December 1931, Harry Fischel wrote to R. Chaim Ozer, (copy of the letter included in this lot), that despite the great recession he is still generously supporting various Torah institutions, especially Yeshivas Rabbeinu Yitzchok Elchanan to which he devoted tremendous energy and donated vast sums. He continues that it had always been in his wish to establish a special Harry Fischel institute in Europe, Yerusholayim and New York. He writes that for various reasons he feels that his purpose in this world is to spread the Torah among the Jewish people, one of which is that he was born on the 17th of Tammuz, the day the Luchos were broken.
He further writes of his plan to establish three branches of the Harry Fischel Institute, one in Kovno under the auspices of the R. Avrohom Duber Kahana Shapiro (D’var Avrohom), one in Yerusholayim under the auspices of R. Avrohom Yitzchok Kook, and one in Vilna under the auspices of R. Chaim Ozer. Each of these was to start with 13 individuals of great potential and they would be receiving significantly more than their current institutions were paying. He asks that R. Chaim Ozer handpick the thirteen for his institute in Poland. The benefit of these groups would be that they would be able to do extensive Torah research, including scientific, and present it to the world through publication. Indeed the Harry Fischel Institute in Yerusholayim, has been for decades one of the most prominent Torah institutions in Eretz Yisroel.
In his letter, R. Chaim Ozer responds that he gives his full support to the endeavor, but asks of Mr. Fischel that in no way should these institutions affect the current support he was providing for existing Torah institutions throughout the world.
R. Chaim Ozer Grodzensky (1863-1940), was born into a distinguished rabbinical family as was renowned from a young age for his brilliant mind coupled with great diligence. He initially learned in Eishishok and later in Volozhin studying under R. Chaim Soloveitchik. He married the daughter of R. Eliyahu Eliezer Grodensky, the leading Rov of Vilna (son-in-law of R. Yisroel Salanter), whom he later succeeded. He dedicated his life to the needs of the Jewish People and was recognized as the leading Posek and spiritual leader of his generation, consulted on virtually every Jewish communal issue. He played an instrumental role in preserving Lithuanian Yeshivos during the beginning of the Communist era, and led the yeshivas of Poland and Russia after the Nazi invasion of Poland in 1939, arranging for these yeshivas to relocate to Lithuanian cities.

מכתב אוטוגרפי שכתב ר’ חיים עוזר גרוז’ינסקי לפילנתרופ הנודע, ר’ ישראל אהרון (הארי) פישל. (תרכ”ה- תש”ח, 1865-1948).
בדצמבר תרצ”א (1931) שלח הארי פישל לר’ חיים עוזר, (מכתב הכלול בפריט זה), בו הוא כותב שלמרות המיתון הגדול הוא עדיין תומך בנדיבות במוסדות תורניים שונים, ובמיוחד בישיבת רבינו יצחק אלחנן לה הקדיש סכומי עתק. הוא ממשיך כי מאז ומעולם היה רצונו להקים מכון מיוחד של הארי פישל באירופה, בירושלים ובניו יורק. הוא כותב כי מסיבות שונות הוא מרגיש שמטרתו בעולם הזה היא להפיץ את התורה בקרב העם היהודי, אחת מהן היא תאריך הולדתו בי”ז בתמוז, שהוא יום שבירת הלוחות.
הוא מפרט את תכניתו להקים 3 סניפים של מכון הארי פישל, אחד בקובנא בחסותו של ר’ אברהם דובער כהנא שפירא (דבר אברהם), אחד בירושלים בחסות ר’ אברהם יצחק קוק, ואחד בווילנה בחסותו של ר’ חיים עוזר. הוא מתכנן כי כל אחד מהמוסדות הללו יתחיל עם 13 טובי המוחות באזור והשכר אותו יקבלו יהיה גבוה משמעותית מהשכר אותו קיבלו ממוסדותיהם הקודמים. הוא מבקש כי ר’ חיים עוזר יסייע בבחירת 13 הראשונים בפולין. היתרון של קבוצות אלה יהיה בכך שהם יוכלו לעשות מחקר מקיף, גם מדעי, ולהציגו בפני העולם באמצעות פרסום. אכן, מכון הארי פישל בירושלים, היה אחד המוסדות התורניים הבולטים בארץ ישראל מזה עשרות שנים.
במכתבו משיב ר’ חיים עוזר כי הוא תומך בכל מרצו במאמץ, אך הוא מבקש ממר פישל שמוסדות אלה לא ישפיעו בשום פנים ואופן על תמיכתו הנוכחית במוסדות קיימים ברחבי העולם.
ר’ חיים עוזר גרוז’ינסקי תרכ”ג-ת”ש (1863-1940), נולד למשפחה רבנית מפורסמת ונודע עוד בצעירותו במוחו החריף והתמדתו העצומה. למד בתחילה באישישוק ואחר כך בוולוז’ין אצל ר’ חיים סולוויצ’יק. נישא לבת הרב אליהו אליעזר גרודנסקי, הרב בוילנא (חתן ר’ ישראל סלנטר), ובהמשך מילא את מקומו. הקדיש את חייו לטובת אחיו היהודים, ונודע כגדול הפוסקים והמנהיגים הרוחניים בדורו. ענה לשאלות הלכתיות מכל רחבי העולם ונועץ בכל ענין ציבורי יהודי. מילא תפקיד אינסטרומנטלי בקיום הישיבות הליטאיות בתקופה הקומוניסטית, והציל את ישיבות פולין ורוסיה במהלך הפלישה הנאצית לפולין בתרצ”ט (1939), כשסידר לישיבות אלו מעבר לערים בשליטה ליטאית.
