R. Yaakov Yosef (1841-1902), was a student of R. Yisroel Salanter, and Yeshivas Volozhin. He served as Rav in various cities in Lithuania, and in 1888, while serving as Av Beis Din in Vilna, he accepted a call to be Rav HaKollel (Chief Rabbi) of New York City. Orthodoxy in America at that time was in a dismal state and he faced fierce opposition to his valiant attempts to raise the standards of the kosher meat industry. Although famous as a tremendous Talmid Chochom, his rabbinical tenure in America was made miserable, and he passed away a broken man. In recent years, many have reported meriting Divine assistance after praying at his Kever.

ר’ יעקב יאסעף (תר”א-תרס”ב 1841-1902) היה תלמיד של ר’ ישראל סלנטר וחניך ישיבת וולוז’ין. הוא כיהן כרב בערים שונות בליטא. בשנת תרמ”ח (1888), בעודו משמש כאב בית הדין בווילנא, הוא נענה לקריאה לכהן כרב הכולל (הרב הראשי) של העיר ניו יורק. היהדות החרדית באמריקה באותה תקופה הייתה בשפל המדרגה, ומאמציו הכבירים לחזק את הסטנדרטים של תעשיית הבשר הכשר נתקלו בהתנגדות עזה. אמנם הוא התפרסם כתלמיד חכם עצום, אך כהונתו הרבנית באמריקה הייתה רצופת תלאות והוא נפטר בשברון לב. בשנים האחרונות, רבים דיווחו על ישועות לאחר תפילה על קברו.
