Mesores S’yog L’Torah on the Mesorah and Safrus by R. Meir Ha’Levy Abulafiah, (Yad Remah). On page 36 there is a correction of nine words handwritten by the famed R. Chaim Volozhiner. Famously, there was a fire which destroyed most of R. Chaim Volozhiner’s seforim and manuscripts. This sefer however, which R. Chaim had lent to R. Yaakov of Ivenitz, survived. On the back of the final page, there is a handwritten note “[this sefer] belongs to the Gaon who is famous in his generation, our master, our Rav Chaim, may his light shine forth, Av Beis Din and Rosh Yeshiva of the holy community of Volozhin”. “Written by Yaakov the son of Baruch from the community of Ivenitz. I borrowed [this sefer] from the aforementioned Gaon and I copied it from beginning to end. The aforementioned Yaakov”.
Additionally, there are two papers pasted in, one stating that “this book belonged to R. Chaim of Volozhin Z”YA” and the other signed, “Dovid Moshe, the son of the Gaon Yaakov K’llnes Av Beis Din of Moscow”.
R. Chaim Rabinowitz of Volozhin (1749-1821) was born in the town of the Volozhin and initially studied under R. Aryeh Leib Ginsburg (the Sha’agas Aryeh), then Rav of Volozhin and R. Raphael Ha’Cohen (the Toras Yekusiel). As a young man, he was attracted by the greatness of the Vilna Gaon and he drew close to him, ultimately becoming his most prominent disciple and spiritual successor. Towards the end of the Gaon’s life, he instructed R. Chaim to open a Yeshiva, which ultimately became the “father” of the present day Yeshiva system. Author of Nefesh HaChaim and Ruach Chaim.

מסורת סייג לתורה על המסורה וספרות מאת ר’ מאיר הלוי אבולעפיה (יד רמה). בעמוד 36 מופיע תיקון של תשע מילים בכתב ידו של ר’ חיים מוולוז’ין המפורסם. כידוע, רוב ספריו וכתבי ידו של ר’ חיים מוולוז’ין הושמדו בשריפה, אולם ספר זה שרד משום שר’ חיים השאיל אותו לר’ יעקב מאיבניץ. מאחורי העמוד האחרון כתוב: “ספר זה שייך לגאון המפורסם בדורו, האדון, ר’ חיים שלנו, נרו יאיר, אב בית דין וראש ישיבת ק”ק וולוז’ין. נכתב על ידי יעקב בן ברוך מקהילת איבניץ. שאלתי [את הספר] מהגאון הנ”ל והעתקתי אותו מתחילה ועד סוף. יעקב הנזכר לעיל”.
בנוסף, ישנם שני עמודים מודבקים בספר. הראשון מעיד ש”ספר זה היה שייך לר’ חיים מוולוז’ין זי”ע”, והשני חתום “דוד משה, בן הגאון יעקב כאילנס אב בית דין מוסקבה”.
ר’ חיים רבינוביץ מוולוז’ין (תק”ט-תקפ”א 1749-1821) נולד בעיר וולוז’ין ולמד בתחילה תחת ר’ אריה לייב גינזבורג (שאגת אריה), רב וולוז’ין דאז, ור’ רפאל הכהן (תורה יקותיאל). בתור אברך צעיר, הוא נמשך לתהילתו של הגאון מווילנא והתקרב אליו. בסופו של דבר הוא הפך לתלמידו המפורסם ביותר וממשיך דרכו הרוחני. בערוב ימיו של הגאון הוא ציווה על ר’ חיים לפתוח ישיבה שהפכה לאבי עולם הישיבות בימינו. בעל ספר “נפש החיים” ו”רוח חיים”.
