The Wimpel is an Ashkenazic custom dating back hundreds of years. Created shortly after the Bris, using the swaddling cloth that was used at that ceremony. The child’s name and date of birth are painted or embroidered onto the cloth, and it then used to wrap around the Sefer Torah.
