In this sefer R. Chaim Vital expounds on the teachings of the Arizal that souls migrate through several bodies in order to rid themselves of particles of evil.
Originally, the Rabbonim of Frankfurt opposed the publication of this work due to the Shabtai Tzvi movement which was then rampant, fearful of charlatans who would claim to be reincarnations of Shabtai Tzvi. Consequently, the editor, R. Dovid Grunhut, a renowned Talmid Chochom and Mekubal in his own right, commissioned a Gentile printer to print the sefer. (See M. Waxman vol. 2 pp. 417-18.)

בספר זה מבאר ר’ חיים ויטאל את דברי האריז”ל שכל נשמה צריכה לעבור דרך גופים שונים בכדי להתנקות מחלקים רעים.
בתחילה התנגדו רבני פרנקפורט להדפסת ספר זה בגלל הכת של שבתי צבי שהתפשטה באותה תקופה. הם חששו מפני שרלטנים שטענו שהם גלגולים של שבתי צבי. משום כך שכר המו”ל ר’ דוד גרונהוט, תלמיד חכם ומקובל מפורסם בזכות עצמו, בעל דפוס גוי שידפיס את הספר (עיין מ. וקסמן חלק 2 עמוד 417-18).
