Fundamental sefer Kabolah authored by R. Chaim Vital (1542-1620), with teachings he received from his Rebbe the Arizal. R. Chaim Vital recorded the primary teachings of the ARIZAL in his sefer Eitz Chaim. He writes in the preface “Know that from the day my teacher began to reveal this wisdom, I did not leave him even for a moment. And any writings you may find in his name, which differ from that which I have written in this book, are certainly error since they did not comprehend his words”.
Although with the advent of the printing press many seforim were printed on a great variety of topics, for many years Sifrei Kabolah continued to be handwritten. This was primarily a means to ensure that they would not fall into unworthy hands. It was not until much later that Sifrei Kabolah were printed. This Sefer Eitz Chaim is one of earlier printed Sifrei Kabolah.
With many important approbations, including those of the Divrei Chaim of Tzanz and R. Yaakov Yosef of Ostrog (Rav Yeyvi).

ספר יסוד בלימוד תורת הנסתר, שחיבר הרב חיים ויטאל (ש”ב – ש”ף, 1542-1620) על פי מה שלמד מרבו, האריזל. הרב חיים ויטאל (מהרח”ו) רשם את תורת רבו בספרו עץ חיים. בהקדמה כתב, ” דע מן היום אשר מורי ז”ל התחיל לגלות חכמה זו לא זזה ידי מתוך ידו אפילו רגע א’ וכל אשר כתוב באיזה קונטרוס ע”ש מורי זלה”ה ….. איזה דבר מנגד נגד מ”ש בספר הזה טעות גמור הוא כי לא הבינו דבריו”.
לאחר המצאת הדפוס הודפסו ספרים רבים במגוון רחב של תחומים, אך באופן מסורתי, ספרי קבלה נכתבו בכתב יד במשך שנים רבות. המטרה העיקרית הייתה לוודא שהם לא יפלו לידיים בלתי ראויות. הדפסת ספרי קבלה התחילה רק במועד מאוחר יותר. ספר עץ חיים הוא אחד מספרי הקבלה הראשונים שיצאו לאור.
