Historic autograph letter to R. Nissim Karelitz protesting a Psak that he had heard in the name of R. Nissim that one may use “Ma’aser Money” to subscribe to the Yated newspaper. Additionally, he strongly protests a political gathering in Bnei Brak calling on Bnei Torah להתחזק בדרכי רבותינו” “ and wonders how involving Bnei Torah in politics is “the way of our Rebbeim”, and as to why Bnei Torah should be reading newspapers at all. This historic letter provides an insight of R. Silber’s understanding of the approach of the Chazon Ish.
R. Binyomin Yehoshua Silber (1916-2008), was born in Poland and learned in the Novardok Yeshiva. Known as a great Masmid and particularly pious, he was referred to from a young age as “Binyomin Ha’Tzaddik”. In 1933, he immigrated to Eretz Yisroel, settling in Bnei Brak where he became close to the Chazon Ish. Known as a great Talmid Chochom, he authored a number of important seforim most notably 14 volumes of Halachic responsa titled Oz Nidberu. He remained affiliated with Agudas Yisroel even subsequent to the establishment of The Degel HaTorah political party.

מכתב אוטוגרפי היסטורי לר’ ניסים קרליץ נגד פסק הלכה ששמע בשם הר’ קרליץ לפיו מותר לשלם דמי מנוי לעיתון יתד מכספי מעשרות. בנוסף, הוא מוחה נגד אסיפה פוליטית שהתקיימה בבני ברק הקוראת לבני תורה “להתחזק בדרכי רבותינו” ומתפלא מאימתי התערבות של בני התורה בפוליטיקה הינה דרך רבותינו, וכן מדוע על בני תורה לקרוא עיתונים כלל. מכתב היסטורי זה מלמד על הבנתו של הר’ סילבר בשיטת החזון איש.
ר’ בנימין ישעיהו סילבר (תרע”ו- תשס”ח, 1916-2008) נולד בפולין והיה מתלמידי ישבת נובהרדוק. נודע כמתמיד עצום וצדיק גדול וכונה עוד מגיל צעיר “בנימין הצדיק”. בשנת תרצ”ג 1933 עלה לארץ ישראל והתיישב בבני ברק. התפרסם כתלמיד חכם עצום והיה מקורב ביותר להחזון איש. חיבר כמה ספרים חשובים ביניהם השו”ת אז נדברו בעל 14 הכרכים. נשאר מזוהה עם אגודת ישראל גם אחרי הקמת דגל התורה.
