Fascinating Yiddish booklet by R. Yisroel Miller, detailing the tragic reality that was the American Rabbinate in the early 20th century. Contains five chapters, including a chapter titled “Rebbe zogt kosher odder shtarbt fun hoonger” (“Rabbi, say Kosher, or you will die of hunger), reflecting the disastrous reality of Kashrus in America at the time, and another chapter titled “Streamlined Reshoim”.
R. Yisroel Miller was a native of Poland and studied in the Slabodka Yeshiva where he received Semicha. He immigrated to Chicago in 1920, and served as Rav of Congregation Knesses Yisroel from 1930 to 1941, and from 1941-1956, as Rav of Congregation Ezras Israel. He founded the Hebrew Parochial School of Chicago in 1949. He was also a member of the Rabbinical Council of America, where he oversaw the religious divorce court from 1972 to 1976.

קונטרס מרתק שנכתב ביידיש על ידי ר’ ישראל מילר. הקונטרס מתאר את המציאות המרה של מוסד הרבנות בארה”ב בתחילת המאה ה-20. כולל חמישה פרקים, ביניהם פרק בשם “רבה זאגט כשר אדר שטארבט פון הונגר” (“רבי, תגיד שזה כשר או שתגווע ברעב”) אשר מתאר את מצבה הקשה של הכשרות בארה”ב באותה תקופה, ופרק נוסף בשם “סטריעמליינד רשעים” “רשעים יעילים”.
ר’ ישראל מילר נולד בפולין ולמד בישיבת סלבודקא, שם נסמך לרבנות. היגר לעיר שיקאגו בשנת תר”ף (1920), שם שימש כרב קהילת “כנסת ישראל” בין השנים תר”ץ-תש”א (1930-1941) ובין השנים תש”א-תשט”ז (1941-1956) שימש כרב קהילת עזרת ישראל. יסד את בית הספר היהודי בעיר בשנת תש”ט (1949) והיה חבר באיגוד הרבנים בארה”ב (RCA), שם היה לאב בית הדין לענייני גיטין בין השנים תשל”ב-תשל”ו (1972-1976).
