Rare early edition of the Noam Elimelech, one of the most fundamental Sifrei Chassidus, by Rebbe R. Elimelech of Lizhensk. Includes Chassidic commentary on the Torah, Talmud and Midrashim, as well as Likutei Shoshana and Igeres HaKodesh, which is a response to his opponents written by his talmidim upon R. Elimelech’s request.
Following the Petriah PETIRAH of Rebbe R. Elimelech in 1787, his sons R. Elozor and R. Eliezer Lipman prepared his Torah for publication. In the introduction they write, that it was on the instruction of their great father that his sefer only be published after his passing. It was received with unprecedented acclaim by all factions of Chassidim, and is perhaps the most well-known and most widely learned sefer Chasidus. For generations many have the practice to learn the Noam Elimelech every Shabbos. One of the central themes of the sefer is the explanation of the role of the Tzaddik, hence the sefer is often referred to as “Sifron Shel Tzadikim”.
In his sefer Shulchan Melachim (page 35b), R. Moshe Tzvi Landau writes that it is customary to place the Sefer Noam Elimelech, beneath the head of a mother during labor. This segulah has been practiced for hundreds of years and there are countless stories of miracles involving the Rebbe R. Elimelech and the Sefer Noam Elimelech.

מהדורה קדומה ונדירה של ה’נועם אלימלך’, אחד מספרי החסידות היסודיים ביותר מאת רבי אלימלך מליז’ענסק. כולל פירוש חסידי על התורה, הגמרא והמדרשים, וכן ‘ליקוטי שושנה’ ו’אגרת הקודש’ – תגובה למתנגדיו שנכתבה על ידי תלמידיו לבקשת ר’ אלימלך.
בעקבות פטירתו של ר’ אלימלך בתקמ”ז (1787), הכינו בניו, ר’ אלעזר ור’ אליעזר ליפמן, את דברי תורתו לדפוס. בהקדמתם הם כותבים שאביהם הדגול הורה להם להוציא לאור את ספרו רק לאחר פטירתו. הספר התקבל באהדה חסרת תקדים בכל רחבי עולם החסידות, ועד היום הוא אחד מספרי החסידות המוכרים והנלמדים ביותר. במשך דורות נהגו רבים ללמוד ‘נועם אלימלך’ מדי שבת. אחד הנושאים המרכזיים בספר הוא הסבר תפקיד הצדיק, ומשום כך הוא מכונה ‘ספרן של צדיקים’.
בספרו ‘שולחן מלכים’ (עמ’ ל”ה ב’) כותב ר’ משה צבי לנדא שנהוג להניח את הספר ‘נועם אלימלך’ למראשות אישה יולדת. סגולה זו קיימת מזה מאות שנים, ואינספור סיפורי ניסים נקשרו לרבי ר’ אלימלך ולספר ‘נועם אלימלך’.
