Although a Sefer Torah may only contain the Hebrew consonantal text, the Masoretic codices however, provide extensive additional material, called “Mesorah”, to indicate correct pronunciation and cantillation, protect against scribal errors and annotate possible variants. The understanding of the Mesorah is crucial to accurate interpretation of the Torah, although the subject is mastered by only a select few. The author R. Yosef Meshau was an acclaimed expert in this topic.

אף על פי שספר התורה מורכב מטקסט עיצורי בעברית בלבד, הקידודים המסורתיים מוסיפים חומר נרחב המכונה “מסורה”. מהמסורה נלמדים הטעמים המורים על היגוי ופיסוק נכונים, וכן ניתן למנוע בעזרתה שגיאות כתיב ולסמן הערות לגרסאות מסוימות. הבנת המסורה הינה קריטית להבנה נכונה של התורה, אם כי רק מעטים שולטים בנושא כראוי. המחבר, ר’ יוסף מעשווא, התקבל כמומחה לנושא זה.
