R. Yoseph Ben Ephraim Gur Aryeh was a renowned Talmid Chochom in Matua, where he was appointed Dayan in 1665. He corresponded regularly with R. Shmuel Abuhav and many of the responsa in the Dvar Shmuel are written to him. He also corresponded with R. Moshe Zacuto (Ra’MaZ). In addition to being a famous Posek, he was a great Kabbalist, as the CHIDA in Shem HaGedolim states, that R. Gur Aryeh was able to hear the ‘Angel’ (Maggid) who taught Torah to the Ra’MaZ.
Variant Edition. This volume of Orach Chaim has the rare original title page with supposed depictions of Rashi, the RaMBaM, the MaHaRIL, the Ma’HarIK, the ReMA, and R. Gur Aryeh himself. Reputedly, the Rabbonim of Mantua ordered the destruction of the original title page, following a dispute concerning the attempt to create portraits of these great luminaries. The copy presented here has the original title page.

ר’ יוסף בן אפרים גור אריה הלוי היה מתלמידי החכמים המפורסמים במנטובה, שם מונה לדיין בשנת תכ”ה 1665. הוא התכתב עם ר’ שמואל אבוהב ורבות מהתשובות בספר דבר שמואל הופנו אליו. הוא גם התכתב עם ר’ משה זכות (רמ”ז).
בנוסף להיותו פוסק מפורסם הוא היה מקובל והחיד”א בשם הגדולים מציין שהרב גור אריה זכה לשמוע את המלאך (מגיד) שלימד את הרמ”ז תורה.
מהדורה שונה. בכרך זה של אורח חיים מופיע עמוד השער הנדיר עם ציורים מדומים של רש”י, הרמב”ם, המהרי”ל, המהרי”ק, הרמ”א ור’ גור אריה. הרבנים של מנטובה הורו לאבד את עמוד השער המקורי, בעקבות מחלוקת סביב הניסיון ליצור דיוקנאות של גדולים אלו. העותק המוצג בזאת כולל את עמוד השער המקורי.
