R. Eliezer Ashkenazi (1513-1586), was born in Venice and, after studying under the local Torah scholars, fled to Egypt, where he served as a doctor and advisor to the king. He then moved to Constantinople and thence to Cyprus. He eventually travelled to Poland, and at the end of his life served as Rav in Cracow.
The commentary of the Vilna Gaon of Megilas Esther is based on this sefer.

הרב אליעזר אשכנזי (רע”ג – שמ”ו, 1513-1586) נולד בוינציאה, שם למד מחכמי המקום עד לבריחתו מצרימה. במצרים שימש כרופא ויועץ למלך. משם עבר לקושטא ואז לקפריסין. לבסוף, הגיע לפולין וכיהן שם כרב בקראקא עד סוף ימיו.
