Commentary of the Ben Ish Chai on the weekly Torah portions.
This is the first of many published seforim of the Ben Ish Chai, printed when the Ben Ish Chai was just 29 years old. The sefer was warmly received by many of the greatest leaders of Sephardic Jewry including the aged R. Chaim Palagi, who in one of his last seforim quotes and highly praises the sefer and its author.
Rabbeinu Yosef Chaim (1835-1909), was born in Baghdad, where his father, Chacham Eliyahu Chaim, was one of the distinguished rabbinical figures. His extraordinary talents were evident from a young age. He initially studied in his father’s library and at the age of ten he began to study with his uncle Rav David Chai Ben Meir, who later founded the Shoshanim L’David Yeshiva in Jerusalem. Upon the passing of Chacham Eliyahu Chaim, the Jews of Baghdad appointed the Ben Ish Chai to fill his father’s place as the leading rabbinic scholar of Baghdad, despite the fact that he was only twenty five at the time. He was widely accepted as a great authority on Jewish law throughout the Middle East, and his decisions were considered to be authoritative even outside Sephardic communities. Acknowledged as a leading Chacham and a great Kabbalist, he was greatly revered by Sephardim and Ashkenazim, scholars and laymen alike. A prolific writer, he authored over thirty works, among them his most famous work, Ben Ish Chai as well as halachic responsa Rav Pe’alim. His Ben Yehoyada and Benayahu, a commentary on the Talmud, is a basic sefer in understanding Aggada.

ספר זה הינו הראשון מבין ספריו הרבים של הבן איש חי, נדפס בעודו בן 29 שנים בלבד. הספר התקבל בחמימות על ידי רבים מגדולי המנהיגים של יהדות ספרד, ביניהם ר’ חיים פאלג’י הישיש, אשר מצטט ממנו באחד מספריו האחרונים, ומציין לשבח את הספר ואת מחברו.
רבינו יוסף חיים (תקצ”ה-תרס”ט 1835-1909) נולד בבגדד, שם שימש אביו חכם אליהו חיים כאחד מן הרבנים. כישרונותיו הנדירים ניכרו מגיל צעיר. לכתחילה הוא למד בספרייתו של אביו, ובגיל 10 התחיל ללמוד עם דודו ר’ דוד חי בן מאיר שייסד לימים את ישיבת “שושנים לדוד” בירושלים. לאחר פטירת חכם אליהו חיים, קיבלו עליהם יהודי בגדד את הבן איש חי כממלא מקומו בתור תלמיד החכם המוביל של בגדד על אף גילו הצעיר – עשרים וחמש שנים בלבד. ברחבי המזרח התיכון הכירו בו כפוסק דגול, ופסיקותיו נחשבו למוסמכות גם מחוץ לקהילות הספרדיות. הוא נודע כתלמיד חכם ומקובל עצום, וזכה להערצה מצד ספרדים ואשכנזים, תלמידי חכמים ואנשי עמל כאחד.
היה סופר רב פעלים שכתב למעלה משלושים ספרים, ביניהן ספרו המפורסם ביותר “בן איש חי” וכן השו”ת “רב פעלים”. פירושיו על הגמרא, “בן יהוידע” ו”בניהו”, נחשבים לספרי יסוד בהבנת האגדתא.
