93. FIRST EDITION OF THE ENORMOUSLY INFLUENTIAL AMSTERDAM HAGADAH. AMSTERDAM 1695

Auction Ended

Item condition: New

The famous Amsterdam Hagadah, with illustrations by the artist, Avraham ben Yaakov (a convert to Judaism), was the first Hagadah, and one of the first Hebrew books overall, illustrated by copper engravings. This printing technique achieved a much more refined and detailed look, and it quickly became a model for many other Hagadahs printed thereafter, and to a large extent it continues to affect illustrations of Hagadahs up until today. Includes commentary of the Abarbanel.
Of particular interest is that the first printed map of the Land of Israel in a Jewish publication was added on a folding page at the end of the book. The map shows the route of the exodus from Egypt, through the desert, to the ultimate settlement in the Promised Land.
Two title pages; the first of which is illustrated with an image of Moshe and Aaron. First tile page backed. Fair condition, some wine stains and foxing. Some markings; including markings on a number of the illustrations. Five pages with small holes affecting text. On page five, in the illustration of the four sons, the face of the wicked son has been defaced; perhaps out of righteous, though youthful, indignation. In the same illustration, minor damage to the hand of the youngest son.
Map in fair condition, some markings, pasted onto backing with some small tears with no loss of text or illustration. Original binding (worn) restored leather spine. Title page backed
Asher Anshel ben Eliezer press. Vinograd Amsterdam 627; Yudlov 93; Yaari 59. 26 pages. 27.7 cm, the first title page measures 30. 3 cm with the lowermost part folded over.
