Autograph responsum regarding the Ketores (incense) sacrifice. Moscow 1872. R. Chaim Berlin (1832–1912), son of the illustrious R. Naftali Tzvi Yehuda Berlin (Netziv) of Volozhin, was famous for his towering scholarship and thousands of queries on a vast range of topics were addressed to him from around the globe. A great rabbinical leader, he served in various communities in Russia including Moscow, Kobrin, Elizavetgrad and Volozhin. In Volozhin he also served as Rosh Yeshiva alongside his father until the yeshiva was forcibly closed by the Russian authorities. In 1906 he settled in Jerusalem, where he was elected as assistant chief rabbi of the Ashkenazic community. Following the passing of R. Shmuel Salant in 1909, he led the Jerusalem Rabbinate and headed many of Jerusalem’s charitable institutions. His complete dedication to them endeared him to the many different religious factions in the city. 17 by 14 cm. Fair condition. Some markings with small holes. Some repairs.
