A collection of various sermons delivered by the renowned R. Yechezkel Landau of Prague (Noda B’Yehuda). Delivered on various occasions including a eulogy on the passing of his wife in 1790. Published posthumously by the author’s son and successor R. Shmuel Landau who included an additional four sermons of his own.
R. Yechezkel Landau (1713-1793) was born in Opatow and studied in the great yeshivas of Ludmir and Brody. He served first as a Dayan in Brody and later as a Rav in Yampol. Whilst in Yampol, his reputation preceded him to the renowned Jewish community of Prague who retained him as Rav, where he served until his passing. He was held in awe by his rabbinical contemporaries as well as the masses, and was greatly respected in government circles. World famous as one of the most prominent rabbinical leaders of his generation, he led a great Yeshiva and authored many important works, including his classic halachic responsa Noda B’Yehuda (after which he is known), Dagul Mer’vavah on the Shulchan Aruch, Tzion l’Nefesh Chaya (abbreviated as Tz’lach) on the Talmud and Ahavas Zion.

אוסף דרשות שונות מאת ר’ יחזקאל לנדא מפראג (נודע ביהודה). הדרשות נאמרו באירועים שונים, ביניהן הספד על פטירת אשתו בשנת תק”נ (1790). הספר הודפס לאחר פטירתו של המחבר על ידי בנו וממלא מקומו ר’ שמואל לנדא, שהוסיף ארבע דרשות משלו.
ר’ יחזקאל לנדא (תע”ג-תקנ”ג 1713-1793) נולד באופטוב ולמד בישיבות לודמיר וברודי המעטירות. הוא שימש תחילה כדיין בברודי ולאחר מכן כרב בימפול. שמו הלך לפניו בעודו בימפול, והקהילה היהודית הנודעת בפראג בחרה בו כרב. הוא כיהן במקום עד פטירתו. חבריו הרבנים והקהל הרחב העריצוהו עד מאוד, וגם אנשי הממשל רחשו לו כבוד רב. נודע ברחבי העולם כאחד מגדולי המנהיגים הרבניים בדורו וכתב כמה ספרים חשובים כולל שו”ת “נודע ביהודה” (שעל שמו הוא קרוי), “דגול מרבבה” על השולחן ערוך ו”ציון לנפש חיה” (“צל”ח”) על הש”ס.
