Autograph letter written to R. Isser Zalman Meltzer and his esteemed Rebbetzin. Dated 1947 with detailed directives on how to distribute various funds earmarked for the destitute in Eretz Yisroel between various individuals and institutions. With mention of the Chazon Ish and continuing with cryptic references to events taking place in that turbulent period between the Holocaust and the establishment of the State of Israel. R. Henkin refers to the “Ashmidai” (a Talmudic term for a snake with seven heads) and singles out seven factions i.e. the Bundists, Communists, Revisionists, Zionists, Mizrachi and Poalai Agudas Yisroel whom he says are responsible for all the problems afflicting our generation.
R. Yosef Eliyahu Henkin (1881- 1973) was born in Klimavichy, and studied at the Slutzker Yeshiva under Rav Isser Zalman Meltzer. Known from a young age as brilliant and extremely diligent, he received Semicha from R. Meltzer, as well as from R Yaakov Dovid Wilovsky (Ridvaz), R. Boruch Ber Leibowitz and R. Yechiel Michel Epstein (Aruch Ha’Shulchan). After serving as Rav in a number of Russian towns, he immigrated to America in 1922. Upon arrival he was quickly recognized as one of the preeminent Poskim in the U.S.A. Renowned as a tremendous Talmid Chochom as well as great Tzaddik, in 1925 he became the director of Ezras Torah, directing the distribution of millions of dollars assistance to the needy, although he personally lived extremely frugally.

מכתב אוטוגרפי ממוען לר’ איסר זלמן מלצר ולאשתו הרבנית החשובה. מתוארך לשנת תש”ז (1947) וכולל הנחיות מפורטות לגבי חלוקת קרנות צדקה שונות המיועדות לעניי ארץ ישראל בין אנשים ומוסדות שונים ותוך הדברים הוא מזכיר החזון איש. בהמשך ישנם אזכורים מרומזים לאירועים שהתרחשו בתקופה הסוערת בין השואה להקמת מדינת ישראל. הרב הנקין מתייחס ל”אשמדאי” בעל שבעה ראשים ומונה שבע מפלגות – הבונדיסטים, הקומוניסטים, הרוויזיוניסטים, הציונים, המזרחי ופועלי אגודת ישראל – האחראיים, כך לדבריו, לכל הקשיים המתרחשים בדורנו
ר’ יוסף אליהו הנקין (תרמ”א-תשל”ג 1881-1973) נולד בקלימאוויצ’י ולמד בישיבת סלוצק תחת הנהגתו של ר’ איסר זלמן מלצר. הוא נודע מגיל צעיר כעילוי ושקדן עצום וקיבל סמיכה מהרב מלצר וכן מר’ יעקב דוד וילובסקי (רידב”ז), ר’ ברוך בער ליבוביץ ור’ יחיאל מיכל אפשטיין (ערוך השולחן). הוא כיהן ברבנות מספר ערים ברוסיה, והיגר לאמריקה בשנת תרפ”ב (1922). הוא הוכר מיד כאחד הפוסקים הדגולים בארצות הברית ושמו יצא לתהילה כתלמיד חכם עצום וצדיק גדול. בשנת תרפ”ה (1925) הוא התמנה למנהל ארגון “עזרת תורה” ופיקח על חלוקת מיליוני דולרים לנזקקים, בעוד הוא עצמו מסתפק במועט וחי בצמצום.
