Commentary to Koheles authored by R. Mordechai Gumpel Schnaber A.K.A Dr. Professor Levisohn. This work was seemingly written as a response to Mendelsohn “Biur” which appeared the year before, which the author found lacking. R. Schnaber was acquainted with Mendelsohn, as they both studied at the Yeshiva of R. Dovid Frankel in Berlin and thus, was perhaps aware of nuances that may not have been readily apparent. Probably this is the first rabbinical response to Mendelsohn’s works.
R. Mordechai Gumpel Schnaber (died 1797) had the unusual distinction of being qualified as a medical Doctor in addition to being an ordained Rav. He originated from Berlin and was a disciple of R. Dovid Frankel (Korban Ha’Eidah). He later traveled to England and studied medicine, where he distinguished himself as an excellent physician, eventually becoming the personal physician of the Duke of Portland. He was subsequently appointed a Professor of Medicine at the University of Upsala Sweden, where he was closely acquainted with the Swedish king, Gustavus III. This particular sefer has a lengthy dedication to King Gustavus.

פירוש על קהלת מאת ר’ מרדכי גומפל שנאבר, המוכר גם כד”ר פרופסור לביסון. ספר זו נכתבה כנראה כתגובה ל”ביאור” מנדלסון שהופיע בשנה הקודמת, שלקה בחסר בעיני המחבר. ר’ שנאבר הכיר את מנדלסון משנות לימודיהם המשותפים בישיבתו של ר’ דוד פרנקל בברלין, וכך היה מודע לניואנסים שאולי לא היו ניכרים בקלות. זו כנראה התגובה הרבנית הראשונה ליצירותיו של מנדלסון.
ר’ מרדכי גומפל שנאבר (נפטר בשנת תקנ”ז-1797) התייחד בהיותו רופא וגם רב מוסמך. הוא נולד בברלין והיה תלמידו של ר’ דוד פרנקל (קרבן העדה). בשלב מאוחר יותר הוא נסע לאנגליה ולמד רפואה. לימים הוא הצטיין בתור רופא מומחה והפך לרופאו האישי של דוכס פורטלנד. הוא התמנה לפרופסור לרפואה באוניברסיטת אופסלה, שוודיה, שם זכה להיכרות קרובה עם המלך השוודי גוסטבוס השלישי. ספר מסוים זה כולל הקדשה ארוכה למלך גוסטבוס.
