Presentation volume given to R. Menachem Mendel
Eckstein of Cleveland for use as a catalog to index his
vast collection of seforim. Silver corners, clasp and
plate engraved Asifas Menachem. The book is divided
according to the Hebrew Alphabet with the intent of
providing an index for a Hebraic Library. Extremely
elaborate title page, illustrated in color by hand,
stating that this book was given to Rabbi Eckstein in
1929 as a token of appreciation for his three years of
devoted service to the Cleveland community.
? R. Menachem Mendel Eckstein (1884-1946)
was born in Sighet, Romania where he was a
contemporary of the Atzei Chaim. Shortly after
World War I, he immigrated to the United
States where he became a communal Rabbi in
Cleveland. A renowned bibliophile, he amassed
a vast collection of seforim and his congregants
apparently presented him with this volume as a
means to catalog them. Rabbi Eckstein, however,
does not seem to have made use of the gift, whose
pages are completely blank.
Fine condition spine slightly frayed. 35 cm.
