Illustrated laws of Shechita in the form of a lung.
An unusual halachic manuscript, highlighting the fundamental laws pertaining
to the ritual slaughter of cattle. With particular focus on the checking of the
lungs, indicating the most common halachic problems occurring during this
procedure. With detailed instructions on inflating the lungs to ensure halachic
compliance, as well as the laws concerning lesions, scabs and other common
disfigurations. With a multi colored guide indicating which colors are Kosher
and labeling the configuration of the lungs anatomy.
The laws of Shechita are amongst the most complicated in Jewish law and
require a thorough Talmudic and Halachic background as well as rabbinical
certification.
On the final line the name of the artist appears, where he writes that he
produced this work under siege and distress in the community of Banowitz (a
village in the Jindřichův Hradec District of the Czech Republic) in 1834.
Ink on paper. Poor/fair condition, stained with some loss of text along folds
and edges. Minor worming. 43.5 by 55 cm.
