116. BALTIMORE JEWISH COMMUNITY 1871/ MOSES MONTEFIORE.

Signed letter by Sir Moses Montefiore, written
to numerous rabbinical figures in Jerusalem.
Concerning donations made by various synagogues
and congregations in Baltimore to benefit the
impoverished Jewish community in the Holy Land.
Dated 1871, it is an early record of American Jewish
philanthropy assisting their needy brethren in the
cities of Jerusalem, Chevron, Tiberias and Safed.
With specific mention of the Chevra Kadisha of Eretz
Yisroel, congregation Shearith Yisroel, congregation
Sheves Achim, and an individual named Eliezer
Herzberg.
Excellent condition. 40 by 25 cm.
Lot includes vintage photograph of Montefiore issued
upon his centenary in 1884.
