Fascinating autograph letter by R. Tuvia Weidenbaum to R. Moshe Soloveitchik and R. Aaron Leib Steinman (who were then together in Switzerland). With information regarding the Yeshivos of Lita during the early days of the War. He writes that he has escaped to Yannova, where he is together with students of Kletzk, Mir and Kaminetz. This letter provides a glimpse of the tenacity and commitment of the Bnei Yeshiva to maintain their Torah learning during wartime.
He continues that “the Brisker Rav is in Vilna with Dov (Berel), Chaim, Dovid and Refoel, while the rest of The Brisker Rav’s family remained in Brisk with the exception of Lifshah who is in Lida…”
Many of the students of the Brisker Yeshiva have joined the Mir Yeshiva but “Yeshivas Brisk is no longer”. “The Brisker Rav is saying shiurim in Kodshim in Vilna. HaRa”M (R. Aharon Kotler) is saying a daily shiur in Peah…”
Although R. Tuvia Weidenbaum tragically perished in the Holocaust, his name was perpetuated by a different yeshiva student who managed to escape using the papers of his murdered friend.

מכתב אוטוגרפי מרתק ששלח ר’ טוביה ווידנבאום לר’ משה סאלאוויצ’יק ור’ אהרן לייב שטיינמן (אשר שהו יחד בשוויץ). עם מידע בנושא ישיבות ליטא בתחילת ימי המלחמה. הוא כותב כי הוא נמלט ליאנובה, ושם הוא שוהה יחד עם תלמידי ישיבות קלעצק, מיר וקמניץ. המכתב מהווה הצצה למסירות נפשם של בני הישיבות לקיים את סדרי הלימוד גם בסערות ימי השואה.
הוא ממשיך וכותב כי “הרב מבריסק נמצא בוילנא ועמו דוב (בערעל) חיים, דוד ורפאל. והשאר נשארו בבריסק ליפשע היא בלידא………”
רבים מתלמידי ישיבת בריסק הצטרפו לישיבת מיר, אולם “לא נמצא עוד ישיבת בריסק”. “והרב מריסק מגיד שיעור קדשים בוילנא אברכים ובני הישיבות באים אצלו לשמוע. הר”מ (ר’ אהרן קטלר) מגיד שיעור יומי על פאה”
אמנם ר’ טוביה ויידנבאום נספה באופן טראגי בשואה, אך שמו הונצח על ידי תלמיד ישיבה אחר שהצליח להימלט באמצעות הניירות של חברו הנרצח.
