R. Yitzchak Yaakov Reines (1841-1915), was born in Karolin and studied at the Volozhin Yeshiva before becoming the Rav of Saukenai, Lithuania in 1867. From 1885, he served as Rav in Lida where he founded a Yeshiva that combined traditional Talmudic studies with secular disciplines. As one of the early Rabbinical supporters of the famed Chovevei Zion organization, in 1893 he joined R. Shmuel Mohilever in proposing a settlement in the Holy Land that would synthesize Torah and labor under the name Mercaz Ruchni (abbreviated as Mizrachi). Although the settlement did not succeed, R. Reines revived the Mizrachi name in 1901, for the Religious- Zionist movement he founded.

מכתב יפיפה לר’ ישעיה מרקוס מריצמונד, ווירג’יניה, עם חתימתו של ר’ יצחק יעקב ריינס, בו הוא מודה לו על תרומתו לישיבת לידא. הוא חותם בברכות חמות לתורמים וכן רשימת חיבוריו האחרונים.
ר’ יצחק יעקב ריינס (תר”א-תרע”ה 1841-1915) נולד בקרולין ולמד בישיבת וולוז’ין בטרם התמנה לרב של סוקנאי בליטא בשנת תרכ”ז (1867). החל משנת תרמ”ה (1885) הוא כיהן כרב בלידא, שם ייסד ישיבה ששילבה לימודי גמרא מסורתיים עם לימודי חול. בתור אחד התומכים המוקדמים בתנועת חובבי ציון הצעירה, בשנת תרנ”ג (1893) הוא השתתף לר’ שמואל מוהליבר בהצעת יישוב בארץ הקודש שישלב תורה עם יישוב ארץ ישראל תחת השם מרכז רוחני (בקיצור “מזרחי”). אף שהיישוב לא הצליח, הרב ריינס החיה את השם “מזרחי” בשנת תרס”א (1901) למען התנועה הדתית-ציונית שהוא ייסד.
