Autograph letter by R. Moshe Feinstein to R. Zalman Sorotzkin, regarding Chinuch Atzmai. R Moshe writes in the name of the entire rabbinical board of the Chinuch Atzmai in America, that they insist on Chinuch Atzmai stringently adhering to two crucial principles.
• That the schools should teach only “Limudei Kodesh” as has previously always been the practice.
• That Chinuch Atzmai should not have any political affiliation.
Apparently there were rumors circulating in America regarding these matters and the board felt it necessary to reiterate their position. R. Moshe writes that he was prevailed upon to personally write this letter in order that it should have the desired effect and requests that Rav Sorotzkin confirm these matters upon receipt of this letter.
R. Moshe Feinstein (1895-1986), was born in Uzda, Belarus where his father served as Rav. Recognized as an outstanding Talmid Chochom from a very young age, he was appointed to his first rabbinical post at age 21 and as Rav of Luban a few years later. Following increased religious persecution in Soviet Russia, he immigrated to the United States. He served as Rosh Yeshiva in Mesivta Tiferes Yerusholayim where he taught hundreds of distinguished talmidim. He had a prime role in the establishment of the orthodox Jewish community in the U.S. and greatly impacted Jewry the world over. He was the preeminent Posek of his time answering thousands of Halachic questions from across the world.

מכתב אוטוגרפי שכתב ר’ משה פיינשטיין לר’ זלמן סורוצקין, בעניין החינוך העצמאי. ר’ משה כותב בשם כל מועצת רבני החינוך העצמאי באמריקה, כי הם דורשים מהחינוך העצמאי לעמוד בשני דברים קריטיים אלו:
• יהיו רק לימודי קדש כהדורות הקודמים.
• שלא שייך לשום מפלגה אלא תחת הדר’ג וראשי הישיבות וגדולי תורה.
ככל הנראה, התפרסמו אז באמריקה שמועות בנושאים אלו, ובשלן ראתה המועצת צורך לחדד את עקרונותיה. ר’ משה כותב כי נתבקש לכתוב מכתב זה באופן אישי כדי לוודא שישיג את מטרתו. הוא גם מבקש מהר’ סורוצקין לאשר את העובדות הללו עם קבלת המכתב.
ר’ משה פיינשטיין (תרנ”ה-תשמ”ו 1895-1986) נולד באוזדה שבבלארוס, שם כיהן אביו כיהן כרב. הוא נודע משחר ילדותו כתלמיד חכם מופלג והתמנה למשרתו הרבנית הראשונה בגיל 21. כעבור מספר שנים הוכתר לרבה של לובאן, ובעקבות רדיפה דתית גוברת ברוסיה הסובייטית היגר לארצות הברית. הוא שימש כראש ישיבה במתיבתא תפארת ירושלים, שם לימד מאות תלמידים חשובים. היה לו תפקיד מרכזי בהקמת הקהילה היהודית האורתודוקסית בארצות הברית, אך השפעתו המכרעת ניכרה הרבה מעבר לגבולות ארה”ב. מוכר כגדול הפוסקים בדורו והשיב לאלפי שאלות הלכתיות מכל רחבי העולם.
