Warm autograph letter by R. Shlomo Zalman Auerbach to Dr. Ben Zev of Yerusholayim, apologizing that he will not be able to make it to a certain gathering, “since on that day at that time I need to officiate at a Chuppa…which is my job…and I cannot cancel”.
R. Shlomo Zalman Auerbach (1910-1995), was a son of R. Chaim Yehuda Leib Auerbach. Recognized from a young age as an outstanding Talmid Chochom and Posek, in 1935, at the young age of 24, he published his first sefer, Meorei Aish, on the subject of use of electricity on Shabbos. The sefer earned the approbations of the leading Gedolim of the time, including R. Chaim Ozer Grodzensky, R. Isser Zalman Meltzer and Rav Kook. Eventually, R. Shlomo Zalman became one of the world’s leading Poskim. His refined character and gentle sensitivity won him reverence in all circles of Orthodox Jewry, apparent at his funeral which was attended by an estimated 300,000 people.

מכתב אוטוגרפי לבבי שכתב ר’ שלמה זלמן אוירבך לד”ר בן זאב מירושלים, בו הוא מתנצל שלא יוכל להגיע לאסיפה מסוימת, “כי באותו היום יש לי לסדר חופה במקום וזה תפקידי ואינני יכול להמנע מזה”
ר’ שלמה זלמן אוירבך (תר”ע-תשנ”ה, 1910-1995) בן ר’ חיים יהודה לייב אוירבך, בלט מגיל צעיר כתלמיד חכם ופוסק. בשנת תרצ”ה (1935) עוד בטרם מלאו לו 25 שנה, הוציא לאור את ספרו הראשון, “מאורי אש” על השימוש בחשמל בשבת. הספר זכה להסכמות מגדולי הדור, כולל ר’ חיים עוזר גרודזנסקי, ר’ איסר זלמן מלצר ור’ קוק. עם הזמן היה ר’ שלמה זלמן לאחד מגדולי הפוסקים בעולם. מידותיו הנעימות ורגישותו לזולת הקנו לו תהילה רבה בכל קהילות ישראל, כפי שניתן היה לראות כאשר 30 רבבות ליוו אותו למנוחת עולם.
