Classic commentary on the Torah by R. Ovadiah Sforno.
R. Ovadiah Sforno (c.1470-c.1550), in addition to his greatness in Torah excelled in several diverse fields: philosophy, mathematics, and particularly medicine through which he earned a living as a physician. Though written in a deceivingly simple style, the Sforno commentary contains great depth. Several relatively recent seforim make extensive use of the Sforno, most notably R. Meir Don Plotzki in his classic commentary Kli Chemdah. With addendum titled “Kavanas HaTorah”, where the Sforno offers original rationales for the various commandments (Ta’amei HaMitzvos).

ר’ עובדיה ספורנו (סביבות ר”ל 1470- סביבות ש”י 1550), היה, בנוסף לגדלותו העצומה בתורה, גם בקיא בחכמות מגוונות אחרות: פילוסופיה, מתמטיקה, ובמיוחד רפואה ואף היה רופא לפרנסה. למרות היותו פירוש עמוק ביותר, נכתב הספורנו בסגנון פשוט מאוד. בספרים מאוחרים מובאים דברי הספורנו בהרחבה, כשהידוע ביותר הספר כלי חמדה לר’ מאיר דן פלוצקי. עם תוספת “כוונת התורה”, בו מעלה הספורנו את טעמי המצוות.
