Two full sides of novella on Maseches Shabbos 25a. Handwritten by the great Chasam Sofer when he was 24 years old! Curiously, although the Chasam Sofer titled his chidushim on Shabbos with the name “Mosef Shabbos”, they were published by his descendants as “Chidushei Chasam Sofer”, as when they were published, the Chasam Sofer had become world famous with the title Chasam Sofer.
R. Moshe Sofer (1762–1839), was the pre-eminent rabbinical leader of his time. He was a talmid of R. Nosson Adler and R. Pinchos Horowitz (Haflo’ah). From his youth, his was renowned as an outstanding Talmid Chochom. He served as Rav in various Kehillos, most notably Mattesdorf and Pressburg and had an enormous influence on his generation and remains revered until the present day. In addition to his rabbinical duties, he also led a great Yeshiva and most of the Rabbonim of the next generation in Austria-Hungary were his talmidim. The Chasam Sofer had particularly distinguished children, including the Ksav Sofer and the Michtav Sofer and hundreds of distinguished descendants, many of whom were great Rabbonim.
As is well-known, for generations, manuscripts of the Chasam Sofer have been regarded as a segulah and have passed from generation to generation. The origins of the segulah are attributed to R. Mordechai Banet.

חידושי תורה בכתב יד קודשו של הגאון האדיר החת”ם סופר על מסכת שבת כה א, אותם כתב בשנתו ה24! כתובים על שני צדדים מלאים. מעניין לציין כי אמנם החת”ם סופר קרא לחידושיו על מסכת שבת “מוסף שבת”, אולם כאשר הוציאו אותם צאצאיו לאור, כינו אותם בשם “חידושי חת”ם סופר”, שכן החת”ם סופר כבר נודע בכל העולם בכינויו זה.
ר’ משה סופר (תקכ”ב- תרצ”ט, 1762-1839), היה גדול מנהיגי התורה בדורו. תלמיד של ר’ נתן אדלר ור’ פנחס הורביץ (הפלאה). עוד מצעירותו נודע כתלמיד חכם עצום, וכיהן כרב בקהילות שונות, כשהנודעות בהן מטרסדורף ופרשבורג. הייתה לו השפעה רבה על דורו ועד היום שמו מעורר הערצה. נוסף לפועליו הרבניים, הוא גם עמד בראשות ישיבה מעטירה וחלק ניכר מרבני אוסטרו- הונגריה בדור הבא היו מתלמידיו. החת”ם סופר זכה להעמיד בנים מופלגים ביניהם הכתב סופר והמכתב סופר ומאות צאצאים נכבדים, אשר רבים מהם שמשו ברבנות.
כידוע, כתבי היד של החת”ם סופר נחשבו במשך דורות לסגולה ונמסרו מדור לדור. מקור הסגולה מיוחס לר’ מרדכי בנט.
