Historic autograph letter by R. Chaim Ozer Grodzensky to R. Avrohom Yitzchok HaCohen Kook. In the letter R. Chaim Ozer writes that he had proclaimed a fast in Vilna and the surrounding areas because Hitler Y”S was elected to power in Germany “The new Tzaros will cause the old ones to be forgotten… may HaShem have mercy on us”.
Written 6 years before the outbreak of the beginning of the War, this letter is indicative of the foresight of R. Chaim Ozer regarding Nazi Germany and its intention of eradicating world Jewry.
R. Chaim Ozer Grodzensky (1863-1940), was born into a distinguished rabbinical family and was renowned from a young age for his brilliant mind coupled with great diligence. He initially learned in Eishishok and later in Volozhin, studying under R. Chaim Soloveitchik. He married the daughter of R. Eliyahu Eliezer Grodensky, a leading Rov of Vilna (son-in-law of R. Yisroel Salanter), whom he later succeeded. He dedicated his life to the needs of the Jewish People and was recognized as the leading Posek and spiritual leader of his generation, consulted on virtually every Jewish communal issue. He played an instrumental role in preserving Lithuanian Yeshivos during the beginning of the Communist era, and led the yeshivas of Poland and Russia after the Nazi invasion of Poland in 1939, arranging for these yeshivas to relocate to Lithuanian villages.

מכתב אוטוגרפי היסטורי שכתב ר’ חיים עוזר גרוז’ינסקי לר’ אברהם יצחק הכהן קוק. בין הדברים כותב ר’ אברהם כי קבע צום בוילנא ובסביבותיה עקב בחירתו של היטלר לשליטה בגרמניה. “צרות אחרונות תשכחנה צרות ראשונות… יה”ר שירחם ה’ עלינו”.
מכתב זה, שנכתב 6 שנים לפני תחילת השואה, מעיד על ראייתו ברוח הקודש של רבי חיים עוזר על גרמניה הנאצית וכוונותיה למחוק את היהדות מעל פני העולם.
ר’ חיים עוזר גרודז’ינסקי (תרכ”ג-ת”ש 1863-1940) נולד למשפחה רבנית מיוחסת והתפרסם מגיל צעיר במוחו המבריק ובשקידתו העצומה. בתחילה למד באיישישוק ולאחר מכן בוולוז’ין אצל ר’ חיים סולובייצ’יק. הוא נישא לבתו של ר’ אליהו אליעזר גרודנסקי – מרבני ווילנא (חתנו של ר’ ישראל מסלנט) – שאת מקומו מילא בשלב מאוחר יותר. הוא הקדיש את חייו לצרכי עם ישראל והוכר כפוסק ומנהיג הדור הרוחני. הוא ענה לשאלות הלכתיות מכל רחבי תבל וייעץ בכל נושא ציבורי בעולם היהודי. הוא שמר ישיבות ליטא בתקופת השלטון הקומוניסטי והציל את ישיבות פולין ורוסיה במהלך פלישת הנאצים לפולין בשנת תרצ”ט (1939) על ידי העברתן לערים בליטא.
