The Mitzvos are listed according to weekly Torah portions and the Sefer is structured correspondingly. Each Mitzva discussed from its Biblical source, followed by the “shoresh” which discusses the underlying basis for the mitzvah and concluding with a brief summary of the Halocha governing its observance – usually based on the RaMBaM. It remains one of the most classic seforim of Jewish thought providing an overview of man’s obligations Vis a Vis the commandments.
There is extensive discussion about who the author of the Sefer HaChinuch was. In the introduction, the author refers to himself as “Ish Yehudi M’Bais Levi Barceloni”. The publishers of the first edition attributed the Sefer to Rabbeinu Aaron HaLevy, who was a talmid of the RaMBaN and the Rebbe of the Ritva. This was accepted for many years by most of the Achronim including the Shach (Yore Deah 25:2, 70:31 and in various other places), and R. Akiva Eiger (Teshuvos Kamma 129 and Tosfos R. Akiva Eiger on Mishnayos, Bava Metzia Perek 9). The Chida however in Shem HaGedolim (Rabbeinu Aaron HaLevy) points out various discrepancies with this assumption and therefore the author’s identity remains unclear.
This second edition contains important variants to the first edition (Venice 1523).

המצוות מפורטות על פי פרשת השבוע, והספר בנוי בהתאמה. מבנה הספר מפרט לכל מצווה את מקורה בתורה, אחר כך את שורש המצווה שדן בסיבה הפנימית מאחורי המצווה ומסכם עם סקירה קצרה של ההלכות הנוגעות לקיומה – בד”כ על פי הרמב”ם. הספר מהווה את אחד מספרי המחשבה היהודית הנלמדים ביותר המספק סקירה על חובת האדם במצוות.
ישנו דיון נרחב על זהות המחבר של ספר החינוך. בהקדמה, מתייחס המחבר לעצמו כ”איש יהודי מבית לוי ברצלוני”. המדפיסים של המהדורה הראשונה ייחסו את הספר לרבנו אהרון הלוי, שהיה תלמיד של הרמב”ן ורבו של הריטב”א. דעה זו הייתה מקובלת במשך שנים רבות על רוב האחרונים כולל הש”ך (יורה דעה כ”ה:ב, ע:ל”א ובמקומות שונים אחרים), ור’ עקיבא איגר (תשובות קמא קכ”ט ותוספות ר’ עקיבא איגר על משניות, בבא מציאה פרק ט). אמנם החיד”א בשם הגדולים (רבינו אהרון הלוי) מציין סתירות שונות בהשערה זו ועד היום זהות המחבר אינה ברורה.
במהדורה שניה זו ישנם שינויים חשובים מהדפוס ראשון שנדפס בונציה בשנת רפ”ג 1523.
