Letter of recommendation on behalf Yeshivas Lomza Petach Tikva signed by R. Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld. This letter is of particular historic importance as it evidences R. Sonnenfeld support of a Lithuanian style Yeshiva in the “New Yishuv”. Founded in 1926 in Petach Tikva, Yeshivas Lomza was the first of such Yeshivos. Distinguished alumni include R. Chaim Kanievsky.
R. Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld (1849-1932), was a student of both the Ksav Sofer and R. Avrohom Sha’ag. In 1873, he emigrated to Yerusholayim together with R. Avrohom Sha’ag and he became quickly became celebrated as one of the city’s leading Torah scholars. Aside from being considered the spiritual leader of Charedi Jewry in Eretz Yisroel, he was also renowned for his piety and holiness, as he was extremely active in chesed activities and public matters. When the MaHaRIL Diskin emigrated to Yerusholayim in 1879, R. Yosef Chaim became his close follower and student, eventually serving as a member of his Beis Din. He assisted the MaHaRIL Diskin in the struggle against the Christian missionaries as well as in his fight against the Haskalah movement, which threatened the Old Yishuv. With the establishment of the Eida Ha’Chareidis, he was prevailed upon to accept the position of Rov of Yerusholayim and was titled “Mara D’Ara Yisroel”.

מכתב המלצה לישיבת לומזא-פתח תקווה, חתום על ידי ר’ יוסף חיים זוננפלד. מכתב זה הוא בעל חשיבות היסטורית מיוחדת משום שהוא מעיד על תמיכתו של הרב זוננפלד בישיבה בסגנון ליטאי ביישוב החדש. ישיבת לומזא, שנוסדה בשנת תרפ”ו (1926), הייתה הראשונה מבין הישיבות הליטאיות בארץ ישראל. אחד הבוגרים החשובים הוא ר’ חיים קנייבסקי.
ר’ יוסף חיים זוננפלד תר”ט-תרצ”ב (1849-1932), היה תלמיד של הכתב סופר ור’ אברהם שאג. בתרל”ג (1873) עלה לירושלים יחד עם ר’ אברהם שאג וניכר עד מהרה לאחד מתלמידי החכמים הגדולים שבה. כאשר עלה המהרי”ל דיסקין לירושלים בשנת תרל”ט (1879), היה ר’ יוסף חיים לתלמידו המקורב, ובסוף שימש כחבר בבית הדין שלו. הוא אף סייע למהרי”ל דיסקין במאבק נגד המיסיונרים הנוצריים וכן במאבקו נגד תנועת ההשכלה, שאיימה על היישוב הישן. מלבד היותו המנהיג הרוחני של היהדות החרדית בארץ ישראל, נודע גם בצדקותו ובקדושתו, שכן היה פעיל מאוד בפעילויות חסד ובעסקי ציבור. עם הקמת העדה החרדית, שוכנע לקבל עליו את מעמד הרב של ירושלים המכונה “מרא דארעא ישראל”.
