Rare work of Mussar, by R. Yisroel Isserel of Ponevezh. This sefer was warmly received and was a classic Mussar sefer in Lithuania. With extensive teachings of the Vilna Gaon and R. Chaim of Volozhin.
R. Yisroel Isserel of Ponevezh was a talmid of R. Chaim of Volozhin. He lived until his nineties, and served as a Melamed for generations. As such he had a particularly broad perspective on Chinuch and the sefer provides a glimpse of teaching conditions prevalent at that time.
In 1994, the sefer was reprinted by talmidim of R. Shmuel Auerbach with his warm encouragement and approbation. The publishers removed a significant part of the sefer, particularly the chapters dealing with chinuch (education) and the correct “derech halimud”, which they perceived as no longer being relevant. For example: In Sha’ar HaTorah, the new edition begins with what is the sixth chapter of the first edition, excluding the introduction and the first five chapters.
A few years later the talmidim of R. Aaron Leib Shteinman reprinted this sefer, and restored all the missing chapters, per the advice of R. Chaim Kanievsky.

ספר מוסר נדירה לר’ ישראל איסר’ל מפוניבז’. ספר זה התקבל באהדה רבה והיה לספר מוסר יסודי בליטא. כולל מאממרים בשם הגאון מווילנא ור’ חיים מוולוז’ין.
ר’ ישראל איסר’ל מפוניבז’ היה תלמידו של הרב חיים מוולוז’ין. האריך ימים עד שנות התשעים ושימש כמלמד מומחה לדורות וכך הייתה לו נקודת מבט רחבה במיוחד על חינוך. הספר מספק הצצה לתנאי החינוך שרווחו באותה תקופה.
בשנת תשנ”ד (1994) הודפס בשנית על ידי תלמידי ר’ שמואל אוירבך בעידודו ובהסכמתו. המוציאים לאור השמיטו חלק ניכר מתוך הספר, בפרט הפרקים העוסקים בחינוך ודרך הלימוד הנכונה, אשר לדעתם לא הייתה רלוונטית בדורם. למשל: בפרק “שער התורה” – הפרק השישי במהדורה הראשונה פותח את המהדורה החדשה לאחר שההקדמה וחמשת הפרקים הראשונים הושמטו.
מספר שנים לאחר מכן תלמידיו של ר’ אהרן ליב שטיינמן הוציאו את הספר לאור במהדורה נוספת, והחזירו את כל הפרקים החסרים כפי עצת ר’ חיים קניבסקי.
