Long autograph letter by R. Leib Gurwicz to R. Pinchos Levin of Agudas Yisroel. First, he congratulates R. Levin on being appointed chairman of World Agudah. He then responds to R. Levin’s complaint that he had not conveyed to the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah the fact that he and other Rabbonim participated in a public fast day because of anti-religious persecution by the government of Israel. He apologizes, but explains that he felt it unnecessary, as it was not a political event rather a day of prayer and repentance, a fact he had stressed in Gateshead Yeshiva in his address that day. R. Gurwicz then mentions the ‘Mi Hu Yehudi’ “who is a Jew” issue. He decries the fact that Lubavitch was taking the lead role in the protests against the institution of this law and not the Agudas Yisroel.
R. Aryeh Zev Gurwicz (1906-1982), learned in the Mir and Baranovitch Yeshivos, as well as under the Brisker Rov. The Brisker Rov held R. Leib in great esteem, and famously once commented “R. Leib knows how to learn”. In 1932, he married the daughter of R. Elya Lopian, then Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshivas Eitz Chaim in London and settled in London. In 1948, R. Leib joined the Gateshead Yeshiva where he served as Rosh Yeshiva until his passing. In that capacity he taught thousands of Talmidim and had a profound influence on the torah world.

מכתב אוטוגרפי ארוך שכתב ר’ לייב גורביץ לר’ פנחס לוין מאגודת ישראל. ראשית, הוא מברך את הרב לוין על מינויו ליו”ר האגודה העולמית. לאחר מכן הוא משיב לביקורתו של ר’ לוין על כי לא דיווח למועצת גדולי התורה את העובדה שהוא ורבנים אחרים השתתפו ביום צום ציבורי בגלל רדיפות אנטי דתיות מצד ממשלת ישראל. הוא מתנצל, אך מסביר שהוא חש שההודעה מיותרת מכיוון שלא היה זה אירוע פוליטי, אלא יום של תפילה ותשובה, עובדה אותה הדגיש בישיבת גייטסהד בשיחתו באותו היום. לאחר מכן מזכיר ר’ גורביץ את סוגיית “מי הוא יהודי”. הוא מגנה את העובדה שליובאוויטש נטלה את התפקיד הראשי בהפגנות נגד ייסוד החוק הזה ולא אגודת ישראל.
ר’ אריה זאב גורביץ תרס”ו- תשמ”ב (1906-1982), למד בישיבות מיר וברנוביץ, וכן אצל הבריסקער רב. הבריסקר רב העריך את ר’ לייב ביותר ואף התבטא פעם “ר’ לייב יודע ללמוד “. בשנת תרצ”ב (1932) נישא לבתו של ר’ אליה לופיאן, אז ראש ישיבת עץ חיים בלונדון והתיישב בלונדון. בשנת תש”ח (1948) הצטרף ר’ לייב לישיבת גייטסהד בה כיהן כראש הישיבה עד לפטירתו. בתפקידו זה לימד אלפי תלמידים והשפיע עמוקות על עולם התורה.
