R. Yaakov Chagiz (1620–1674), was born in Morocco. He was a talmid of R. Dovid Karigal, who later became his father in law. In about 1646, he travelled to Italy to print his seforim, where he lived until 1657 when he immigrated to Yerusholayim. He was renowned as a tremendous Talmid Chochom and had many distinguished Talmidim. He was a prolific author, however a large portion of his manuscripts were lost. He actively opposed Shabtai Tzvi and was one of the signatories on the “Cherem”.

ר’ יעקב חגיז (ש”פ- תל”ד, 1620-1674), נולד במרוקו. היה תלמידו של ר’ דוד קריגל ולימים נישא לביתו. באזור שנת ת”ו (1646) נסע לאיטליה כדי להדפיס בה את ספריו ונשאר שם עד תי”ז (1657), שאז עלה לירושלים. נודע כתלמיד חכם עצום בעל תלמידים דגולים רבים. היה סופר רב פעלים, אולם למרבה הצער, מרבית כתביו אבדו. התנגד נמרצות לשבתי צבי והיה מהחתומים על ה”חרם”.
