Typed letter, signed by R. Chaim Mordechai Katz of Telz, with an additional autograph paragraph by the D’var Avrohom, regarding money donated in support of Torah institutions in Eretz Yisroel following the 1929 riots, including Yeshivas Chevron and the Diskin Orphanage. The letter is demonstrative of the esteem in which these institutions were held in Lithuania, that despite the rampant poverty prevalent they still supported financially.
R. Avraham Duber Kahana Shapira (1870-1943), was the last Rav of Kovno and one of the leading Talmidei Chachomim and Rabbinical leaders in Lithuania during the pre-WWII era. Renowned as a great Talmid Chochom and distinguished community leader. He passed away in the Kovno ghetto, and was perhaps the only Rav given a funeral under the watch of the Nazi occupiers.
R. Chaim Mordechai Katz (1894-1964), was a son-in-law of R. Yosef Leib Bloch of Telz. Renowned from his youth as an outstanding Torah scholar, he headed the Kollel in Telz. In 1940, R. Chaim Mordechai travelled to the USA together with his brother-in-law R. Eliyahu Meir Bloch, on a perilous journey via Siberia and Japan, to attempt to rescue the yeshiva students and their families who remained in war-ravaged Telz. Upon their arrival in the US, they reestablished the Yeshiva in Cleveland, Ohio.

מכתב מוקלד, חתום בידי ר’ חיים מרדכי כץ מטעלז, עם מכתב אוטוגרפי נוסף בכתב יד מאת הדבר אברהם, בעניין כספים שנתרמו כסיוע למוסדות תורה בארץ ישראל לאחר פרעות תרפ”ט (1929). כולל ישיבת חברון ובית היתומים דיסקין. מהמכתב ניכר גודל החשיבות שניתנה למוסדות אלו בליטא ושלחו כסף למרות העוני.
ר’ אברהם דועבר כהנא שפירא (תר”ל- תש”ג, 1870-1943), היה הרב האחרון בקובנא ומגדולי תלמידי החכמים והמנהיגים הרוחניים בליטא שלפני מלחמת העולם השנייה. נודע כתלמיד חכם עצום ומנהיג קהילה דגול. נפטר בגטו קובנא. מסתבר כי היה הרב היחיד שהלווייתו התקיימה תחת השקפת השומרים הנאצים.
ר’ חיים מרדכי כץ (תרנ”ד- תשכ”ד, 1894-1964), היה חתנו של ר’ יוסף לייב בלוך מטעלז. נודע עוד מצעירותו כתלמיד חכם עצום ועמד בראש כולל טעלז. בשנת ת”ש (1940), נסע לארה”ב יחד עם גיסו ר’ אליהו מאיר בלוך, במסע מורכב דרך סיביר ויפן, במטרה להציל את תלמידי הישיבה ובני משפחותיהם שנותרו בטעלז מוכת המלחמה.
עם הגעתם לארה”ב, הם החליטו להקים בה ישיבה חדשה, ובשנת תש”א (1941), נפתחה ישיבת טעלז בקליבלנד, אוהיו.
