Historic letter signed by R. Eliezer Yehuda Finkel sent to R. Yisroel Yaakov Ha’Cohen Jaffe (Rov in Manchester, England). He begins by warmly thanking R. Jaffe for his donation to the Yeshiva and continues with warm blessings. He then writes of the Mirrer Yeshiva that whilst the spiritual state is on an extremely high level, the physical state is desperate, that the future leaders of K’lal Yisroel are in a state of hunger and there is a constant fear that the Yeshiva will have to close. He continues that he had heard that there is a plan to open a Va’ad Ha’Yeshivos in Manchester. The idea being to establish one central fund, to raise funds on behalf of all the Yeshivos and then distribute the money between them. R. Lazer Yudel vehemently opposes this idea, explaining in detail that the Yeshivos will end up with a severe financial loss.
R. Eliezer Yehuda Finkel (1879-1965), was a son of R. Nosson Tzvi Finkel, the Alter of Slabodka. In 1903, he married the daughter of R. Elya Boruch Kamai whom he succeeded as Rosh Yeshiva in the Mirrer Yeshiva. At the onset of WWII, R. Eliezer Yehuda traveled to Palestine in an attempt to obtain visas for his students with the intention of relocating the yeshiva to Yerusholayim, but these plans were interrupted by the upheavals of the war. In 1944, he opened a branch of the yeshiva in Jerusalem which today has grown to be the largest yeshiva in the world.

מכתב היסטורי החתום בידי ר’ אליעזר יהודה פינקל, שנשלח לר’ ישראל יעקב הכהן יפה (רב במנצ’סטר). הוא פותח בהכרת הטוב לר’ יפה על תרומתו לישיבה וממשיך בברכות חמות. לאחר מכן הוא כותב כי הרמה הרוחנית בישיבת מיר הינה גבוהה ביותר, אולם המצב הפיזי נורא וכי מנהיגי הדור הבא של כלל ישראל נמצאים במצב של רעב וכן שהם בפחד מתמיד שיאלצו לסגור את הישיבה. הוא כותב ששמע על תכנית להקים וועד הישיבות במנצ’סטר – קרן שתרכז את כל התרומות למען הישיבות ותחלק את הכספים ביניהם. ר’ לייזר יודל’ מתנגד נחרצות לרעיון, בהסבר מפורט שהישיבות תצאנה מזה בהפסד פיננסי חמור.
ר’ אליעזר יהודה פינקל (תרל”ט-תשכ”ה 1879-1965) היה בנו של ר’ נתן צבי פינקל (הסבא מסלבודקא). בשנת תרס”ג (1903) הוא נישא לבתו של ר’ אליהו ברוך קמאי, שאת מקומו ירש כראש הישיבה. בראשית מלחמת העולם השנייה, ר’ אליעזר יהודה נסע לארץ ישראל בניסיון להשיג ויזות לתלמידיו מתוך כוונה להעביר את הישיבה לירושלים. אולם, תכניות אלו נגדעו בעבן בעקבות מהפכות השואה. בשנת תש”ד (1944) הוא פתח סניף של הישיבה בירושלים. כיום, ישיבת מיר צמחה לישיבה הגדולה ביותר בעולם.
