Rare uncensored edition of the responsa of the Netziv, Meishiv Dovor. Apparently the family printed some copies of the sefer and then halted publication until certain parts were redacted. There are at least 14 differences between this and the subsequent edition both printed in 1894 shortly after his passing. Most of the erasures are of the names of those who sent or received responsa. Perhaps the most significant erasure is in section 1 pages 71-73 where, in this edition, the Netziv quotes the well-known “Ha’Melitz” journal, issues 173 and 207. In the redacted version the mention of the “Ha’Melitz” is removed. Evidently those who were involved in the publication did not wish the public to know that the Netziv read these journals. It is interesting to note that some of these responsa were published in the “Ha’Melitz” journals.
R. Naftoli Tzvi Yehuda Berlin (1816–1893), was one of the greatest rabbinical figures of his era, Rosh Yeshiva of Volozhin and author of many important works. His first wife was the daughter of R. Yitzchok of Volozhin, the son of R. Chaim of Volozhin. His second wife was his niece, a daughter of his brother in law, R. Yechiel Michel Epstein, the author of the Oruch Ha’Shulchon. A son from his first marriage, R. Chaim Berlin, became the Rav of Moscow and his daughter married R. Refoel Shapiro later Rosh Yeshiva in Volozhin. R. Meir Berlin (later Bar-Ilan) was his son from his second marriage.
Additionally, unlike most copies, this copy is made of quality paper as opposed to the usual thin paper.

מהדורה נדירה של שו”ת הנצ”יב – משיב דבר ללא תיקוני הצנזורה. נראה כי המשפחה הדפיסה כמה עותקים של הספר ואז הפסיקה את הפרסום עד שחלקים מסוימים צונזרו. ישנם לפחות 14 הבדלים בין שתי המהדורות, ששניהם נדפסו בשנת תרנ”ד (1894). רוב המחיקות הינם שמות כותבי מכתבי השו”ת שנשלחו או התקבלו. אפשר לומר שהמחיקה המשמעותית ביותר היא בחלק הראשון בעמודים 71-73, בהם, בגרסה לא מצונזרת זו, מצטט הנצי”ב את כתב העת הנודע “המליץ”, גיליונות 173 ו -207. בגרסה המצונזרת הוסר המקור- “המליץ”. ברור כי אלו הקשורים בהוצאת הספר לאור העדיפו להסתיר מהציבור את העובדה שהנצי”ב קרא בגיליונות אלו. מעניין לציין כי תשובות אלו נדפסו בכתב העת “המליץ”.
ר’ נפתלי צבי יהודה ברלין הנצי”ב (תקע”ו-תרנ”ג 1816-1893), מגדולי הרבנים בתקופתו, עמד בראש ישיבת וולוז’ין וחיבר כמה ספרים חשובים. היה מפורסם בשקדנותו ועמלו העצום בתורה, וכתב ספרים על מגוון רחב של מקצועות תורניים.רעייתו הראשונה הייתה בתו של ר’ יצחק מוולוז’ין, בנו של ר’ חיים מוולוז’ין. רעייתו השנייה הייתה אחייניתו, בתו של ר’ יחיאל מיכל אפשטיין, בעל “ערוך השולחן”. בנו מנישואיו הראשונים, ר’ חיים ברלין, התמנה לרבה של מוסקבה, ובתו נישאה לר’ רפאל שפירא, לימים ראש ישיבת וולוז’ין. בנו מנישואיו השניים היה ר’ מאיר ברלין (לימים בר אילן).
בנוסף, בשונה מרוב העותקים, עותק זה עשוי מנייר איכותי לעומת הנייר הדק הרגיל.
