According to tradition, Jews first settled in Yemen 42 years before the destruction of the First Temple. The three major population centers for Jews in southern Arabia were Aden, Habban and the Hadhramaut. Yemenite Hebrew has been studied by scholars, many of whom believe it to contain the most ancient phonetic and grammatical features. In 1948, following the establishment of the State of Israel almost all of Yemen’s Jews were airlifted to Israel in “Operation Magic Carpet”.

על פי המסורת, היהודים התיישבו תחילה בתימן 42 שנה לפני חורבן בית ראשון. שלושת המרכזים היהודיים הגדולים היו עדן, חבאן וחצרמוות. תלמידי חכמים מעיינים בעברית התימנית ורבים מהם מאמינים שהיא מכילה את סימני ההגייה והדקדוק העתיקים ביותר. בשנת תש”ח (1948), עם קום מדינת ישראל, הועברו כמעט כל יהודי תימן לארץ ישראל במסגרת “מבצע מרבד הקסמים”.
