Important essay by R. Dovid Luria regarding Talmudic education. The first two paragraphs discuss whether or not certain topics of the Talmud should be studied by young students, particularly certain Agadata. The third paragraph is in response to a proposal by some Maskilim, that young men should wait until the age of fifteen to study the Talmud. The RaDaL strongly disagrees, and writes that the study of the Talmud is more important than that of the Mishnayos. The fourth paragraph is an elaboration of the first two. This essay was written as an official response to the Russian government who aided by some “Maskilim” wished to institute various changes in the traditional Cheder and Yeshiva system. These changes were strongly opposed by the great rabbinical leaders of the time.
R. Dovid Luria (1798-1855), known by the acronym RaDaL, was one of the greatest Torah scholars of his time, whose expertise covered all areas of Jewish knowledge. He was born to a wealthy family whose lineage traced back to the Ma’HarShaL. Known as a child prodigy with a photographic memory, his father hired private teachers for him until the age of 12 when he went to learn in Vilna under R. Shaul Katzenelebogen. At the age of 18 he returned to his hometown of Bichov, where he established a Yeshiva.
He authored an enormous number of works, many of them still in manuscript.

חידושי תורה חשובים מאת ר’ דוד לוריא בעניין חינוך תלמודי. שני הקטעים הראשונים דנים בשאלה האם תלמידים צעירים אמורים ללמוד נושאים מסוימים בש”ס, ובפרט אגדתות מסוימות. הפרק השלישי הוא תגובה להצעה שצעירים ימתינו עד גיל 15 כדי ללמוד גמרא. הרד”ל מתנגד לכך נחרצות וכותב שלימוד הגמרא חשוב יותר מלימוד משניות. הקטע הרביעי הוא פירוט על שני הקטעים הראשונים. המכתב נכתב כתגובה רשמית לממשלה הרוסית שביקשה לחולל שינויים מסוימים במערכת החיידרים והישיבות המסורתית בעזרת משכילים מסוימים. שינויים אלו נתקלו בהתנגדות חריפה של גדולי המנהיגים הרבניים בתקופה.
ר’ דוד לוריא (תקנ”ח-תרט”ו 1798-1855), המוכר בכינויו רד”ל, היה מגדולי תלמידי החכמים בתקופתו ובקי בכל ענפי הידע התורני. הוא נולד למשפחה עשירה מצאצאי המהרש”ל. היה ידוע כילד פלא עם זיכרון פוטוגרפי, ואביו שכר עבורו מורים פרטיים עד שנסע ללמוד אצל ר’ שאול קצנלנבוגן בווילנא בגיל 12. בגיל 18 הוא חזר לעיירת מולדתו ביכוב, שם הקים ישיבה.
הוא כתב כמות עצומה של ספרים, רבים מהם עוד בצורת כתבי יד.
