Signed letter by the Chofetz Chaim and R. Chaim Ozer dated 1931, addressed to the Jews of South-Africa. The background to this historic letter is that the Yeshivos in Europe had sent emissaries to the Jewish communities in South-Africa to raise much needed funds, and for some time the communities had responded generously to the cause. However, it seems that a rumor had been spread doubting the trustworthiness of the emissaries, which resulted in the communities restricting them from collecting funds for the Yeshivos. When this came to the attention of the Chofetz Chaim and R. Chaim Ozer, they sent this Open Letter to the Jewish communities in South Africa to clarify the matter. Beginning with the importance of the more affluent and stable Jewish communities sharing the burden of their less fortunate brothers in need, and how this support is crucial to the endurance of the Yeshivos in the diaspora. Although historically a large portion of this necessary financial support had come from Russia since the Revolution and the subsequent persecution of the millions of Jews residing there, a greater responsibility lay with the Jews of South Africa. Whilst expressing their profuse gratitude for their past generosity to the Yeshivos they express their shock and disapproval at the restriction placed on the collection of funds on behalf of the Yeshivos. They then reassure the community that the funds are dealt with in a proper manner, and the rumors of wrongdoing are completely false. Interestingly, they add that this libel was nothing more than an act of the Satan as a tactic to stop Torah study in the Yeshivos. The letter concludes by imploring the community to make the right decision and be supportive of the European Yeshivos in their time of great need.
This letter provides a glimpse of the tribulations of that era of the Jewish communities and Yeshivos of Europe, as well as the tremendous efforts of the Chofetz Chaim and R. Chaim Ozer to assist them. This was part of their broader efforts as co- founders of the Va’ad Ha’Yeshivos.
